I have a friend that wants to go out and have a drink in some big old fancy NYC type of place. Any suggestions?

Not that I have much experience in this dept, but a few years ago we went to one of the hotels west of Grand Central, I think it was on 44th. It was a big plush lounge with overstuffed white sofas. We drank a bunch of cosmos. I even spilled some on one of the plush white sofas and the spill miraculously disappeared. Wow, it was cool. It was across from the Algonquin lounge but I can't remember the exact name. Something with an R.

I love Voro in SO - great cocktails - good food too. On the cocktail front, my new favourite is a French Martini... yum...

Montclair and S. Orange are the outter boros. I was thinking about Manhattan. These all sound great though. |

The W hotel in Times Square has a great bar. It’s all glass and sticks out into Times Square, so you feel like you’re in a fish bowl watching the people go by. Very touristy and fun. Club Macanudo 26 E 63rd St is trendy, but for obvious reasons smokey.

I'm not sure if these are hip and swanky (as I am neither), but they are "classy, NYC" type bars. The King Cole Bar & Lounge (in the St. Regis Hotel on 55th street) is an elegent bar with mahogany walls and a Maxfield Parish mural. Very Cool. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11313373/new_york_ny/king_cole_bar_lounge. html The Bar at Piano Due - they have a restaurant on the second floor (which is FANTASTIC if you're looking for a place to eat), but the first floor is a huge bar. Dimly lit with gorgeous and very interesting mural. The bar is indescribable. This would be my pick of the bunch. It's just gorgeous. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/41776837/ http://www.nypost.com/food/63433.htm City Hall If you're heading to the downtown area, this is a good one. Not huge, but is a bar off of the restaurant - they make great martinis. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7113300/new_york_ny/city_hall.html |

Here's a link to the Piano Due site - you can see what the bar (they call it "Palio Bar" so it has a different name than the restaurant) http://pianoduenyc.com/site.htm And - of my recommendations, I think the King Cole bar is the most "old world" with the mahogany walls. |

VIG, you're thinking of the Royalton. You really can't beat a Bombay Sapphire martini at the Four Seasons (restaurant, not hotel). |

Many are private clubs... Did you attend any University that has a club in the city? They will usually let you in for a drink and a look around...they also has some nice reciprocal relationships with other clubs. The funny thing is that the more snooty the club the more empty the bar lounge area! We do belong to one and when we asked, "Where is everybody, when does this place get hopping?" on a Friday night we were told that, "This" - meaning 4 crusty old sailors and a gal in slacks - "is hopping!" I think Bemelmen's is still open in the Carlyle Hotel and the bar at the Mark Hotel uptown is quite swank. I also like the bar at the new Four Seasons on East 57th Street...it is very deluxe, although it is new. |

Virtual It GirL: I think you meant the Royalton. For "old New York" I second the Monkey Bar, even though it has been totally renovated. |

Thanks everyone. I am pretty sure my friend went to all of these places in the past few days. I have always wanted to check out the St. Regis place. |

If you ask nicely Bunny's will serve you a NY style drink. This consists of Bud being poured into a very small glass at a price that will astound you. |

Now that the weather is getting nicer, you may want to check out the rooftop bar at the Penninsula Hotel [55th, off 5th]. Amazing views - great drinks [albeit pricey]. If you want trendy-NYC options try Hotel Ganesvoort - either rooftop bar [Plunge] or Garden of Ono [sure to have a celeb sighting] in the meatpacking district - or the rooftop bar at the Maritime Hotel [you'll swear you've been transported to Miami]. Inside option, hit the bar at Cain. Enjoy! |

I second the top of the Penninsula - love it!! If it's still too chilly out for you, try the top of the Ritz-Carlton downtown. It's indoors and has stunning views of Lady Liberty. |
