I was wondering if anyone knows of any place in New Jersey, or even in New York, that sells really upscale, artistic, tasty baked goods (cakes and such). I'm hoping to find stuff that doesn't have that traditional bakery flavor and texture. Thanks for any suggestions. |

Try "food of our own design" - 1988 Springfield Ave, Maplewood. 973 762 0985 (I think!) I "found" them a month ago - superb cakes etc - they supply places in Manhattan etc and decided to also do retail - worth a try... |

I would without a doubt go to Ceci Cela in Soho. I also recommend The Black Hound (in the Short Hills Mall), Petrossian, The French Oven and even the place where I work that has all of these...Dean and Deluca;all in NYC. I also have heard great things about CocoLuxe in Peapack Gladstone. Good luck!

For old fashioned, delicious iced cakes/cupcakes I would say Magnolia Bakery. Cupcake Cafe does the most beautiful cakes with gorgeous spring flowers but the attitute in that place it sometimes too much - it is very convenient to the Lincoln Tunnel though. For more of french patisserie look (ganache etc) I agree with Joseph's recommendations. |

Black Hound is great, but the SH location closed. I believe NYC is still open. FOOOD is not open on weekends, I want to try it but haven't gotten there yet! Also try Cafe Bethoven in Chatham. Not quite on the level as Black Hound but definitely better than the standard bakery. |

Just got a cake from cupcake cafe - they are beautiful. I like the cake texture too -- it's pretty dense - like a pound cake - very good. |

NetNomads sells some of the FOOOD cakes by the slice. Might give you an idea if it meets your needs. I've been to parties where they've served their cakes and they are amazing. I haven't seen any decorated in an interesting way, but they taste above and beyond bakery cakes. |

The best melt in your mouth cakes, petit fours etc are by Judy Scheurmann in Millburn. She is local and her strawberry mousse cake with chocolate ganache is to die for. Her yeasty cheese danishes melt in your mouth. Call her 973.763.6623. |

If you don't mind making them, the best cupcakes I have ever had (including those from Magnolia, Cupcake bakery etc) was from a mix purchased at Williams Sonoma. They take several hours to make, this is not a shortcut, but they are heaven Here is a pic:
