my house next choices would be China Gourmet or Joy Luck on Northfield for food that approaches real Chinese food. Avoid B&H (it ain't even close to real) and Cathay 22 (they burn dishes and wait staff is surly.. probably because overworked).

Following the advice of people here, I have tried most of the Chinese places in the area and found NONE of them to be very good. Bill & Harry is definitely no worse than the others. There used to be a place in Jersey City we'd go to when we lived there called KOSHING. Man, it was good, but, they moved to the 'burbs somewhere. Anyone know where? |

Bill & Harry's is fantastic. (Just be sure to call ahead -- judging by the lines out the door every time I'm there, plenty of other people think so, too.)

Sometimes B&H are REALLY good. Lots of other times they are mediocre at best. I'll second the votes for Ginger Taste |

It seems like people either love or hate B&H. I have NEVER had a satisfying dish from B&H and kick myself every time I forget that and order again from there. But, people who do like it really defend it. Now that I've discovered Ginger Taste, I haven't bothered with B&H. Hunan Wok (on Springfield Ave) is decent for quick delivery. They can deliver much faster than Ginger Taste most of the time, so if we're ordering late, we may go for Hunan rather than Ginger, but I still think Ginger Taste is better. |

Try Chen's in New Providence....it's worth the ride. By the way, they also have a location just off Mountain Avenue in Springfield. |

we've had a couple issues w/ the quality of the food from bill & harry's the last 2 times we ordered from there (about 6 months ago.) - after that, we've moved on to ginger taste & have been very pleased. (as an aside - b&h's doesn't deliver & g.t. does.) |

We're loving Peking House in West Orange for delivery (it's a takeout place mostly, you wouldn't want to eat in); favorite dishes include beef with string beans, moo shoo pork, and the best fried vegetable dumplings I've EVER had -- real vegetables inside! |

I'll second amandacat on Peking House--for takeout, it's the best of the places I've tried--the ingredients high-quality, prices reasonable, and they will adjust spiciness for those of us that like spicy dishes. |

Hunan Spring on Morris Ave in Springfield is our favorite, by far. Huge menu, tons of specials, lots of unique dishes - all delicious. |

I never tried Bill and Harrys. In fact, I never tried a chinese food place around this area. But the same way I have a bit of a problem going to an ethnic restaurant that has music on the background playing "american music", or a chinese-owned greek restaurant (or mexican-owned italian restaurant, or vietnamese-owned hungarian restaurant, and so on...), a chinese restaurant named "Bill and Harry's" doesn't sound right to me either.

Umm, I'm not sure your point really applies here, Lou. Growing up in Manhattan and attending school in a district that included Chinatown I've had tons of Chinese friends through the years, and they ALL had "American" names -- Betty, Patty, and Carol immediately come to mind, but I could probably reel off 100 more. There was even a guy in my school named Lincoln -- can't get much more American than that! Off the top of my head I can't remember if I've ever met a Chinese-American Bill or Harry, but it's certainly within the realm of possibility. |
