We'd like to go somewhere locally (within a comfortable driving distance) sometime in September. Ideas? |

Hmmm... Are you looking to go for a weekend or longer? Are you looking to do things outdoors (e.g., hiking, swimming, etc.)? Are you looking for a place to stay that has spa options (e.g., larger hotel chain)? How far is comfortable? Up to 3 hours?

lilb - excellent questions...I shoulda been clearer. just for a weekend. probably only one night (2 of the 4 have kids) so I'd say the drive should be no more than 3-4 hours We are looking for spa options, in an area with stuff to do/see. I'd love to say outdoor activities, but these gals aren't those kinda gals, so I'll settle for a spa and gym.

How about Saratoga? It takes me about 3 hours to get there. You could visit one of the several very nice spas that, from what I remember, tend to be less expensive than what you get here. Downtown Saratoga has fantastic restaurants (too many to list - but I've never gotten a bad meal in Saratoga), several bars (Carolines, the Brew Pub, and a Wine Bar) Plenty of shopping in the downtown area as well. The official racing season isn't until the end of July, but there I think harness racing is ongoing. There's one track you can go to and have dinner while you watch the harness races. They have a variety of places to stay, from B&Bs to Inns, to Hotels http://www.saratoga.org

If you want to do Spa stuff I highly recommend the place I just went. www.Deerfield Spa.com Though you might need to do 2 nights on a weekend. There are plenty of spa treatments and indoor classes, (and outdoor), good healthy food, and there's a lot of shopping nearby (we didn't do that at all). More luxurious accommodations (also more expensive) was last year's spa, the Copperhood, as you know I also give that place a big thumbs up. BTW, Copperhood is right near the place Buzz mentioned, though I don't recall seeing it on the strip. Woodstock is nearby if you want to check out the galleries. Or, how about Bucks County PA? Right across the Delaware, lots of funky galleries and shops. Never been but I've heard good things from a friend. |

Once again, I have to say CAPE MAY! All kinds of things to do and see and September is the perfect time to go IMHO. We stayed here recently: www.congresshall.com Has a really great restuarant and a sumptuous "lounge" right in the building, and is right in the heart of the historic district and within walking distance to just about everything (shopping, great restaurants)! They offer spa services on-site "in-season." I would suspect that September would still be "in-season," but it couldn't hurt to call and ask just to double check. Also, if you don't hit traffic, which you probably shouldn't in Septmeber (at least not like you would find during the summer), it's under 3 hours straight down the GSP. |

New Hope PA could also be cool, but I don't have any specific suggestions as to where to stay. For that matter, Philly is a pretty fun city. But I guess you have to be in a "city" mood. |

VIG - I don't want to do a spa weekend, although I'd like to stay somewhere that has a spa for one treatment. But I don't want it to be the focus of the weekend. Buzz - I have one "yay" on lazy meadow, one "I'll do it if I'm out voted". Have one more to go! |

I love the finger lakes region in NY, beautiful lakes, vinyards with wine tastings, accomodations to suit from camping to luxury hotels, boat rides. Ithaca is beautiful, lots to see and do. http://www.fingerlakes.org/ |

Bailey - funny you should say that -- one of the 4 suggested the Finger Lakes. I'll check out the link Meandtheboys - I'm going to look into Cape May too. I also suggested another place you once recommended - the Settler's Inn. But I think it may be more a place I'd rather go with my husband! |

Pippi, I agree. I wouldn't do Settlers Inn for a girls weekend. A little too quiet up there. But very nice for a romantic getaway. |

I'd go to Manhattan. If are close enough friends to share one room, four of you can stay at the Ritz Carlton Battery Park City for 50 bucks each (sometimes). Tons of great restaurants and day spas, museums, shopping. What more could you ask? |

gretchen and boomie - While I do agree, NYC has everything a girl (or 4) could want.... Unfortunately, we are all NYC refugees...we've spent so much time together in the city, it's no longer special. |

Newport, R.I. has it all. The Mansion walks, restaurants, shopping, the sea. If you've never been, it's just great! Annapolis is very nice too. |

Bite the bullet and take 1 1/2 hour plane ride to Bermuda. Stay either in town at the Hamilton Princess or 10 minutes outside at Elbow Beach. You will have fun, sightsee and have spa stuff if you want. The locals are very friendly and do tend to stay out very late.... |

Pippi, Do you like going to wineries? The north fork of Long Island has about 22 wineries and there are a lot of quaint bed and breakfasts in the area. I grew up on the island and always enjoyed spending wekends out there. |

They aren't "local" but within 4 hours, so they may meet your criteria-Boston to the north, D.C./Baltimore to the south. Great cities with tons to do in each. Tough for one night though. Minimum of two required. I would recommend Boston, especially in September. Great sights, restaurants, colleges, history. Shopping on Newbury Street (with several spas), dinner in the North End. Great walking city. One reason I love living in SO is the proximity to Boston and D.C. I get to each at least once a year for a long weekend. Heading to D.C. on Memorial day in fact. Usually go to Boston in September or October. Nowhere else in the country can you be so close to three such great yet different cities: NYC, Boston and D.C. |

Rehobeth or Bethany Beach, DL. Beach is beautiful that time of year & water is at its warmest. Outlet shopping is there, as well as some little towns in the area for antiques. Take the ferry over from Cape May. (or if you stay in Cape May, you can consider taking the ferry to the outlets for the day). |

Have you decided yet? Friends and I recently did this. We went to the Marriott in Mystic CT. They have an Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa attached. Also pool and fitness center. The steak house in the hotel is excellent for dinner and the breakfast buffet was very yummy. We went to Mohegan Sun on Sat. night and my friends went shopping in Mystic. We stopped at the submarine museum on the way home. My friend planned everything to the minute and I went a long for the ride, but it was a fun ride! Only thing is we left later than planned on Friday afternoon, so it took 2x as long as it should have to get there! (it ended up taking about 3-3 1/2 hours) the trip back on Sunday took 90 minutes. I say convince your friends to go for 2 days. The first night we didn't get a lot of sleep just because it was a strange bed etc. The second night was much better because we were finally relaxed. |

How about Mohonk Mountain House outside of New Paltz? It's a little over 2 hours (maybe), rustic but luxurious (prices are not low), with a range of rooms and prices....Includes a massage center, a new spa with indoor pool, fireplaces to read by, lovely hiking trails. They have price deals during the week and other times...

Carol Anne - we haven't decided yet, but Mystic sounds like an option. One of my traveling companions suggested Mohegan, although none of us gamble. ral - if I ever get a chance to go back to Mohonk, it will be with my husband! |

Just got back from a weekend with my 5 college buddies. We stayed at the Saybrook Point Inn and Spa in Old Saybrook, CT. http://www.saybrook.com/ It was about a 3 hour drive from the Wood and a really good option for you, I think. While we did get facials/massages on Saturday morning, it was NOT the focus of the trip. Took nice long walks around the town and along the L.I. Sound, had a few nice lingering meals (nothing too fancy, just low key and lots of wine) and browsed at some of the boutiques/antique shops. The rooms were very spacious and clean and not too pricey. There is also a small health club, fitness classes like pilates and yoga, and a nice resturant at the inn. P.L. me if you want more info... |
