Has anyone tried? Walked by, menu looks great and reasonably priced compared with Lilac, Lorena's, and Terra. |

I found this. The source was a bit outdated, but I don't see why anything would have changed. Cafe Monet, 309 Millburn Ave, Millburn (973-376-8555). BYO. |

Just went to Cafe Monet again. Still loving it! Fresh food prepared perfectly. It's easier to get a table now compared to a few months ago after they got that very strong review in the NY Times. |

Food is European bistro-ey fare. I love the lamb shank there and the specials have never disappointed. Appetizers are great. Last time I went there, I had the mussels for starters and crispy duck for main... excellent. The wife had a wild mushroom appetizer and rack of lamb for main. They prepare food very well and use fresh items which really makes a difference in taste and texture. Prices are not super cheap, some would even say close to NYC prices. I believe main courses run about $20-$30, appetizers around $8-$12. Nice cosy little place that allows bring your own wine since they don't have a license. Service was an issue initially because of inexperienced staff, but they do try even if they were a bit bumbling... it certainly wasn't because the waiters were snooty or purposely unattentive. Seemed to have improved last time I went though. |

We went last night but weren't wowed. I like the atmosphere and the energy of the place. Tables are tight though— my not large husband kind of had to sit sideways a little and a server walk passed and stepped right on his toe (he was wearing open toed sandals too!) he just looked down and didn't apologize. The hostess was friendly. Food came out very quickly. We asked suggestions and ended up with the mussels and grilled octopus appetizers. We liked both, though I thought it could use a pinch of salt (no salt on the table). Appetizer portions were not large, but it was a nice little taste (we shared both). For our main course my husband chose the lamb shank and I chose the skate, which the hostess raved about. My husband ate his but wasn't thrilled. (He gave it a 6 out of 10.) I couldn't eat the skate. The sauteed spinach and celery root slaw were tasty, but the skate had no flavor and was very oily. It was pan fried, sort of in a cornmeal crust. I asked for salt but it really didn't help at all. Eventually, I got the hostess' attention and told her I found it too greasy and not flavorful. She said it was in a butter sauce, but this was not written on the menu nor did she say it when I asked her about the dish. They took it away. My husband asked for them to bring me the wild mushroom streudel. (I was glad to have him say it, I was already feeling self-conscious about not liking my dish.) They quickly obliged. This was fresh and tasty. We shared a dessert that was very good, a sort of chocolate mousse and espresso ice cream. (Tiny ramekin-sized portion, even if we weren't sharing.) Much preferred Antonella's for fresh seafood in a BYO. Still have to try Terra and Lorena's.
