I have a friend whose parents live in Estes Park. Spent a week or so there a few years back. The highlight of my trip was a when we drove to a Wolf Rescue where we got to interact with the wolves in their enclosures. I remember it being a bit of a drive, but it was totally worth it. http://www.wolfsanctuary.net/index.htm Also the Estes Park Brewery was cute for a meal and sampling all their beers. |

while in estes park... you can cruise over to the stanley hotel (the inspiration for the stephen king book, the shining) http://www.stanleyhotel.com/overview_location.htm for a drink. i wouldn't suggest dinner as it is pretty expensive... unless you don't mind spending the dollars. from estes park you can cruise up to rocky mountain national park if you're into hiking and beautiful/peaceful scenery. if you take an early evening drive, there's no doubt you'll come across all sorts of wildlife (usually viewable from the road)... pretty impressive. as you're driving through "the park" you'll essentially be on what is called "trail ridge road." it's like driving to the top of the world. you'll be above the tree-line and i've actually driven through clouds in the past. at the top, you can get out at a ranger station and hike up a short distance to a look out point where you can see the entire world. if you drive through rocky mountain national park, on the other side is a town called grand lake which is a small/rustic mountain town. lots of shops/restaurants/outdoor activities like fishing, boating, horse back riding, etc. outside of denver... redrocks (the outside ampthitheatre) http://www.redrocksonline.com/index.asp has beautiful views of the surrounding area and you can kick around on stage and imagine you're bono singing sunday bloody sunday. you could also cruise over to golden, colorado (not to far away) for a bite to eat and a tour of the coors bewery. it's a cute, lowkey town... and hey... they give free tastings of that rocky mountain spring water used to brew the beer after the tour. and, oh yeah, you can sample the beer too. in denver itself there are some pretty chill bars/restaurants/shops in lodo. the fado irish pub is really cool. food is good, beer selection is really nice and the interior is really decked out. it opens onto the square, and if warm enough, they have outdoor seating. http://www.fadoirishpub.com/denver/menu/food/dinner. or if you're an adventurous meat eater, you can try the buck horn (http://www.buckhorn.com/) which has all kinds of wild game on the menu... one of denver's oldest restaurants. shoot me a pl if you are looking for specific recommendations. - parkah --> |
