Well, I have my date already, so that's taken care of.

Thinking dinner, music, etc. for a fun, relaxing date on Saturday. Is anything going on locally? There was nothing on the calendar.

Toro Loco is having a pretty good cover band on Saturday. You could go in for dinner and stay for the music. I think they go on at 10???? they were really good the last time they were there!

H2TA always seems to have something good going on a Saturday night, and now they have that liquor license! Check thier website.

Also, I've always wanted to try Cecil's jazz club in West(?) Orange. Don't know about food there though.

I hear Cecils is wonderful!!! What a great idea! The reason I haven't gotten there is because of the smoke issue. But now! Thanks for the reminder.

I would go without a doubt to Shanghai Jazz in Madison; very good food and great music.

Crossroads in Garwood is lots of fun and gets rave reviews, great cajun food and live music.

Hi,
A friend's band (local - with yet another local band) is playing:

Walk the Dog makes a return engagement to Jumbalaya's on Stuyvesant Ave
in Union this Saturday night, May 6.

Special guests *** FELT *** opens the night at 9:00, and all of our
musical friends are invited to join an open mike jam at 11:00.

Good food, cold beers, big
Margaritas, and kick Mexican and Portuguese food.

Here's the Google maps to Jumb's:

wow, I though that Jumbalaya's had closed down for sure. They got busted a few months ago for having a very large number of underage (mostly SHU) people in there. I heard recently thqat they were still open, but didn't believe it fully until now.
The reason I thought this was that NJ has a fine of $10,000 per underage person, and I had understood that they had caught enough people to bring the fine well over $300,000. I have never been to this place, but they must do a lot of business to take a hit like that and continue on staying open.

Crossroads in nice, but gets very crowded. The one time I tried eating there I couldn't even get a seat at the bar. If this is your choice, I would go early.

Well, I'm definitely thinking more local, though my husband might be interested in Shanghai Jazz.

I know I've heard Walk the Dog before but what do they play? Mostly cover stuff? I'd like to get a nice quiet meal beforehand (perhaps CAfe MOnet) and then go listen to music/hang (if we don't pass out right after).

I have also heard Walk The Dog, but can't really recall...Felt is mostly cover but some original. I'd say rockish/blues...a bit of the Dead...

Have never been to Jumbalaya's...hmm

Problem is I'm not the hugest jazz fan. I definitely wouldn't eat at Jumbalaya's. Just go for drinks maybe.

I've had hit and miss meals at Jumbalaya. I still go but sometimes even I wonder why. I guess I'm just a sucker for fajitas and blackened fish. No where else local does either very well.

I had possibly the worst frozen margarita ever (the sourmix was HORRIBLE) at Jumbalaya, and would reccomend that you stick to bottled beer.

The worst thing about Jumbalaya is the service to be honest, and I'm NOT a stickler for service. These buffoons don't have a clue, or they just like to treat everyone as if they are college kids. Not sure which.

I would however consider this to be VERY VERY local. It's literally on the edge of Maplewood, maybe just over a mile from my house.

Long story short, the place aint horrible, but it aint great either. If you haven't been, I WOULD suggest going at least once to see if the extremely low key atmosphere and the cajuney style food is up your alley. However, I would NEVER go here for a DATE NIGHT. For that I would go somewhere a bit nicer.

I have been there, though it was several years ago. I am not a beer drinker! I think I'd rather try someplace a bit more comfy. Maybe Van Gogh's Ear or HTTA style.

Had a somewhat disappointing meal at Cafe Monet in Millburn (read about it on the Cafe Monet thread), went into town (Maplewood) and walked around to see what was going on and decided we'd have more fun at home. We did. It was enjoyable.
