Has anybody done this? I would like to go to CA this weekend for a family event. There are some really good fares out of Philadelphia, but what would it cost to take the train to Phila (and maybe a taxi from train station to airport)? I would be gone 4 or 5 nights, so I'm thinking leaving the car in Phila would eat up the savings on airfare? Thoughts anyone? thanks! MC |

Amtrak to Philly- $80 r/t, 1 hour, 10 min. Then another $5 train (30 minutes) from 30th st station to the Airport. The other train option is NJ Transit to Trenton, switch to SEPTA to Philly, for $30 r/t, but that takes 2.5 hours, and you still have the train from the station to the airport to take. Cab from Center City Philly to Airport is $20 flat rate. If you do fly out of philly, bets bet is to drive the 2 hours to the airport, and take a $9 per day parking...plenty of it there.... |

Thank you Smarty!! So basically, to break even, I can pay about an extra $100 to fly out of Newark, or $50 to fly out of LaGuardia (counting $50+ for r/t shuttle from EWR). Driving to Phila does sound easier than the trains, and probably about the same cost, not counting externalities. And I love driving. thanks again! MC |

It's not a horrible drive either, but you do need to add about 2 hours to your travel time. And if you are a "time equals money" type of personality then you most certainly are NOT saving any money. |

Thanks Alley, I know you're right, but once I'm on a vacation day I'm definitely a time = time person. I would not get any paid work done in the 2 hours (let's not even talk about house work), and actually the drive to Phila is sort of sentimental to me, for better or for worse. |

I'm the same way, more of a time=time person, and I LOVE a good sale/discount. Having said that, when we have a 6 hour flight to California, the last thing we want to do is make our travel 2 hours longer unnecessarily. |

I just did the trip last week from Maplewood to PHL and back. It added 2 hours in each direction. But I literally parked right at the entrance to the terminal for $17 per day. (Look online to determine the exact (east or west) entrance to use for each terminal for your airline.) http://www.phl.org/terminal_map.html Have a safe and happy trip! |

If you know anyone in the suburbs of South Jersey (Cherry Hill, Mt. Laurel, Moorestown, Haddonfield), you could take a greyhound bus from Newark or NYC for about $15 one way to Mt. Laurel. Then have a friend drive you to the airport (20 minutes). Or take the Greyhound bus to Philly for about $20 one way and cab it to the airport. (Sorry don't know the fare.) We have family in South Jersey and I love the Philly airport. |

Edited post. If I could actually read, I'd have seen that the advice re NJT + SEPTA to PHL had already been rendered. Never mind :-) |
