Good afternoon all,
If anyone can help me with this one, I'd be most appreciative. I'm interested in finding:
1) a good place to take my child blueberry, strawberry, or blackberry picking around late June within approx. 30-40 miles of S.O.; which

2) might also have a farm nearby where she can see and possibly touch farm animals.

By the way, the "touching" of the animals in not imperative, nor is the existence of a farm the important factor. The berry picking is the key. I'd love to be able to take her somewhere where picking wasn't too difficult, and paying-to-pick is, of course, acceptable, but I don't know where to begin. I'm wondering if there are farms that host just this sort of thing in the summer months (berry picking/hay ride/touching the animals). An ORGANIC farm would be wonderful. Can anyone give me a word or two of advice?

Thanks.

Alstede Farms in Chester, which is about a 20-30 min drive. Strawberry season should be kicking in June. They also have farm animals and plant nurseries. Can't really touch them too much but you can feed them and all (and yes, they have sanitizing facilities). Nice place to do pickyourown and is targeted very nicely for young families.

Fosterfields on old route 24, a few miles west of Morristown has farm animals and demonstrations of things like cidermaking, shearing, milking and other old timey farm skills, plus a house in untouched original 19th century splendor.

Another vote for Alsted, though it takes me at least 30 mins to drive there. Hayrides to the strawberry fields in June, fun fun fun!

Rutgers performs a wonderful service providing the names of all the farms in NJ that allow you to pick your own. You can find and search the list at:

http://www.ifplantscouldtalk.rutgers.edu/pyo/

Alstede is listed there, with telephone numbers.

Another site run by the state...it shows all the farms by county, with harvest dates, etc.
