Looking for a restaurant both kids and parent can appreciate near Penn Station in New York. Any suggestions? Good pizza would be great (especially if there's other stuff on the menu). Need it for tonight! Thanks. . . . |

Or, even better, in the low '40s around 9th Avenue. Thanks. |

JOhn's Pizzeria, 44th and 8th maybe...one block west of Times Sq on the corner. Beautiful old church building, good pizza. |

Perfect, of course, thank you. I'm handing off the kids to my husband so that I can go to theater with my mother. I just wanted to give him somewhere specific to go, so he doesn't have to drag the tired 6-year-old around too much. |

Try any of the less formal ethnic restaurants along 9th Ave. He's in luck that's probably the best area for food in Manhattan these days. Here are a few that come to mind: - Pam's Real Thai (49th St & 9th, on the SW corner). - Grand Sichuan (chinese) or Uncle Nick's (Greek)(both 9th Ave btw 50th & 51st) - Delta Grill (New Orleans/cajun) (SE corner of 9th and either 48th or 47th st) - Little Saigon (Vietnamese) (SE corner of 9th and either 48th or 47th) - World Wide Plaza open area have two restuarant/bars that should have outdoor seating by now... may be interesting choice (the plaza is on 49th btw 8th & 9th Ave) Anyhow, he'll be spoiled for choices... I would recommend he just take a walk up/down 9th Ave btw 44th & 56th and check out dining options. A lot of the less fufu places are great for family dining.

Just tried an adorable little place called Mama Empanada. It's on 9th and about 50th. As you might guess from the name, they serve only empanadas. Quite an extensive empanada menu, delish sangria and very yummy! It's tiny, but cute. Methinks a child would love it for the kitchy/gimmicky atmosphere. But I don't have kids, so what do I know?? |

Thanks for all the suggestions. There really are so many interesting-looking eateries in those parts these days. (I had a decent lunch recently at Cafe Madeleine, which is charming.) It's always nice to have a heads-up, though, for some suggestions specifically geared toward young eaters, and delightful to have alternatives to pizza. We'll definitely try some of these places soon. In the meantime, while they were eating the ubiquitous pizza at John's, my mother, some friends, and I ate at Esca, which was simply fantastic. That wasn't very nice of me, was it? |
