I wanted to warn everyone about Cuban Pete's in Montclair.
I was there on Friday night with a large group, including a very pregnant friend.
We had made reservations, but had to wait for almost an hour.
Make a long story short: Someone else was given our table, and when
we questioned them, we were told to leave if we didn't like it.
The man(who turned out to be the owner!!!) later came outside where
we were waiting, and proceeded to be extremely rude and told
us again, to leave if we didn't like his attitude!
We did leave and proceeded to have a lovely evening at Thai Chef.
Before leaving I did tell him that I will make sure all of Maplewood knows
about his attitude!!

Ooooooh...

First post and it's to b*tch about someone's business.
Doesn't play too well.

As a "foodie" what good things can you share?

If you are treated rudely by a business, you should post about it, especially, according to the poster, since the business owner seems to have done the utmost to make the evening an unpleasant experience at Cuban Pete's.

Heh. I guess this is the same owner who was recently arrested for operating a sangria bar without going through the formality of getting a liquor license? Doesn't sound like he's a stellar businessman, so i'm not terribly surprised.

And for the record, we at there once. They were out of cuban sandwiches.

I didn't realize that the Gaslight had expanded into Montclair...

Just curious, is the Strawling, the offspring of the Strawman?

Had a terrible experience there myself. If you want good cuban food, not a hyped atmosphere purchased at pier one, try La Havanna Cafe, written up in Ledger a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for your post Monica and welcome.

KMK, I must disagree with you. To report the kind of treatment/behavior in question is a public service and is one of the reasons for the existence of forums like this one.

I would NEVER wait for a reserved table for more than 15 minutes unless treated VERY solicitously; the treatment reported here was the opposite of solicitousness.

I would love to hear where you and Monica do like to eat and where one is treated well.

Dine well, all.

David

kmk:

You should be embarrassed that even after 1238 posts, you still don't know what message boards like these are partly about.

Your post was rude and totally unecessary.

Cuban Pete's:
Called Saturday and asked for a reservation that night. They said a reservation wasn't necessary; just "come on down." Well, we came on down, arrived at 8:30 pm and was told the wait was a "solid hour." It was as if they wanted us to leave. So we went elsewhere. I don't expect a table at a great place w/o a reservation, but I do expect some honesty. How about, "oh we're booked solid for tonight, would you like to reserve a table for another night?" or, "We are really busy tonight; would you like to put your name on a waitlist?"...or even just "Sorry we have no room tonight" but "Come on down?????" Seems like Cuban Pete's needs to learn the reservation ropes. Monica, we love Thai Chef and I'm glad you liked it.

Had a reservation there made several weeks in advance for a group of 6 on a Saturday night. When person who made the reservation called to recheck time that day, she was told that they had cancelled the reservation since she had never called before to reconfirm (she had not been told to do so). Despite fact that reservation person remembered their prior conversation, she was told we would not be accomodated that night!

Wow, arrogance AND rudeness AND atrocious "business" practices. You'd need a paddy wagon and a cattle prod to get me near that joint.

Steer clear, all.

Very depressing to hear about this turn of events.

We were there a few months back, it must have just opened, and they were (a) not very crowded and (b) very friendly and solicitous. The sangria bar was great and so was the food.

Success may have spoiled them and then some. No reason to treat people like that.

As Yogi Berra said, Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded.

Algren's Law revised:

1. Never play poker with a man named "Doc"

2. Never sleep with anyone whose troubles are worse than your own.

3. Never eat at a place called Mom's Cuban Petes.

La Isla in Hoboken and the many Cuban restaurants in Union City are great places to eat.
