Going to drive through Delaware (via the Cape May ferry) to a visit a friend in Virginia. Thinking of taking it easy stopping along the way since we're driving with small kids. Any recommendations on nice family-friendly spots in Delaware? Thanks!

I think the Cape May ferry puts you into Lewes comes into Lewes right? You will be in southern DE at that point (Northern Delawareans call it "slower lower").

What sort of activities are you looking for, and what time of year? What will your travel route be from there, Rt 1 South?

Southern DE (or Sussex County) is primarily known for its beach communities, Rehoboth, Dewey, and Bethany Beaches. These are all very family friendly, and Rehoboth is more of an open diverse community.

Are you sure you want to do that? That road is really slow.

Will be going in a couple of weeks. The visit with friend is really on a Sat, so was thinking of leaving here on Thur morning and taking it easy for 2 days before arriving on Sat PM. Open to all kinds of activities but will be with 2 kids under 3. I know it's not the most direct route to Virginia (actually on the way back we'll do more direct path via Philly area), but it's sort of a short-ish vacatioin with family.

The ferry from Cape May does get you to Lewes... figure the boys will love it. We could spend time in Cape May (or not) so don't have to just spend beach time in DE. Any ideas would be helpful and mucho appreciated!

Thanks!

Since you will pick up RT1 in Lewes you are going to pass through pretty much all of the DE beach towns, and also into Ocean City, MD. Ocean City not only has a great boardwalk there, but they have a lot of places and things to do there (GoKarts, mini golf, you name it) that kids would probably like. They have just about every chain restaurant there too, so you can find what you need. Assateague island is close by which is a huge state park with wild horses. People camp there a lot.

Most of the other beach towns also have boardwalks.

Try googling for things too. I just googled "things to do in rehoboth" and got this link to a washington post article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2003/07/23/AR2005032403351. html

Try the same for ocean city, md or dewey beach, or bethany beach.

Good luck!
