Hi. Dinner out w/ beloved, want it to be special, no reservation, local or willing to drive 1/2 hour, where can we go?? Happy to eat at bar if it'd help but don't want long wait once arrived. THANKS! Dine well, all, even on short notice. David |

Try Terra, but call first. I think you do need reservations, even if it's at the last minute. Or Antonella's in SO...too, I'd call beforehand to make sure a table was available.

try David Drake in Rahway (second best dining experience Ive had at a restaurant in NJ)...I was able to get in a couple of months ago on short notice because of a cancellation and it seemed like they were taking some later walk-ins...certainly special, and with Moms Day tomorrow, maybe some restaurants will be quieter than others. |

The secret to dining: Dinner sucks. Why call ahead? Why fight the crowds? Lunch is the most important meal of the day. And you have to eat out when you're away from home during the workday anyway. Whereas with dinner, you're already at home and you can make it at home better than all but the best restaurants and cheaper than all but the cheapest. If you have to eat dinner out, eat Monday through Thursday as a walk-in, or go before 6:30 or after 9:30. Bob |

Give Antonella's a call. They're on Village Plaza in S.O. Wonderful food and nice atmosphere. Or try Cafe Monet in Millburn. |

The Village Cellar, in South Orange...We've had 4/4 amazing, not overly priced, experiences there, and its NEVER crowded. (Hopefully, that will change and it will stay permanent)...We've been to every iteration at this location, and this is the first one we really enjoyed. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT! |

You won't need reservations yet, but a new restaurant in Montclair just opened. Good food, good chef, BYOB. Passionne on Walnut street. The chef is a friend of mine, so I am a little biased. Pork shank was awesome. |
