Does anyone know of a place in Essex Co serving a good dim sum brunch on Sundays?

Thanks.

China Gourmet on Eagle Rock Ave, WO, (near Pal's and Ponderosa) has been mentioned several times here on MOL. Also, Joy Luck on Northfield Avenue, in WO, across from the Turtle Back Zoo/South Mtn Arena has been mentioned as well.

We prefer the former to the latter but both are fine. At China Gourmet ask for little menu with the Chinese people Chinese food...the chives w/ bean sprouts and salted fish is one of our all time favorite dishes anywhere.

Enjoy, all.

How exactly do you phrase that David, when you ask?
Do you actually say,
"Can we have the little menu with the Chinese people Chinese food?"
Also, stupid Q...how does one order dim sum, just order a bunch of selections? Is there a large vegetarian choice?

Wow, DB, I'm truly impressed. That's one humble authentic home cooked comfort dish in many Chinese homes.

PD:

Did you post that thrice by mistake or because you were trebly impressed? ;-D

PL me if you want to eat that dish together some time, it's been a while.

VIGSHH:

Just ask for the little menu or there are often some sitting on the table up front near register and mints bowl. As for eating dim sum just pick a few that look interesting and try them. If strict veg (no seafood) it is not a wide choice and go with someone who can guide. We'd love to go some time; let me know. Sundays often work.

Eat well, all.

David

VIGSHH:

I realized that you may not know that dim sum are typically served from little carts and trays that are rolled/passed around the room by servers. You can see most of them before choosing and when you choose the item/price is noted on small card that you have on your table and which is totaled when done so you can pay.

The often yummy ones in little bamboo or aluminum steam baskets can't be seen but you just ask server to lift top to view. Should go first time w/ experienced friend. I volunteer!

Be well, all.

Taste of Asia has the best dim sum on Sundays. Too bad our town did not support this place. It is packed in Chatam all the time.

We love the buffet on Route 10 in East Hanover in the Marshalls/Dick's Sporting Good's Shopping Center. Good, fresh food. Lots of different types of dumplings and fresh sushi made to order. $10 pp or so before 4pm. Frequented by Asians which always means to us it is good and authentic.

Virtual Girl: There is a vegetarian dim sum restaurant in Chinatown that I've enjoyed a couple of times. I can't think of the name of it now, but can find it if you think you'd be going that way. It's had several reviews from major publications that were very favorable.

I eat veggie dim sum all the time, and love it.

Believe it or not, we go there a few times a month and I am not really sure of the name. Maybe Royal Buffet?

Connie76 - There is another wonderful Asian restaurant very close to where you are thinking. It is called Penang Malasyian Cuisine on
200 State Route 10, (973) 887-6989 (Just west of Home Depot, same turn-off). I doubt they have Dim Sum, but they have some of the best Asian food I've had in the area.

The place Connie is talking about is inside Kam Man market. There's also a very good Vietnamese take out place next to the Chinese take out. Must be somewhere else if they serve sushi.

No, it is not inside the market. Although we have been in there and it looks like thye have pretty good buffet food to go by the pound. Royal Buffet is a large restaurant in the middle of the shop of stores along the strip at the opposite end of that parking lot. It is near the Marshalls and shoe store and jewelry plaze.

Does anyone know about a place on RT 22 kind of near some Asian markets and one of the Plainfields? We passed a place on the way back from the "other" Home Depot and WalMart, etc on 22 the other weekend. Looked like lots of families on a Sunday -- but it was Mother's Day.

Juju, know which one you're talking about. Was supposed to be very good. I've only been there once and thought it was good... but not worth the hassle to drive all the way out there compared to just eating locally at Joy Luck which was about the same.

Juju, are you talking about Dynasty? We tried to go there once, but the wait was 1 hour, and my kids won't wait that long. I don't even know if they will eat dim sum. But from the number of people there, it must be good.

We were actually at Dynasty for Mother's Day dinner. I would say they were as busy as during some other times we went there. I never had to wait for a table, not even on Mother's Day. I know they have Dim Sum but I never had it there since I would typically go there at dinner time. Dim Sum is more of a late morning/ early afternoon thing. Overall good food.

Do any of you know which of the dim sum places serves good turnip cakes? When I was in China I ate MANY of those after being introduced to them...they are now my favorite, hands down, over all other dim sum brunch offerings. I've had them only a few times here, and so far just in Chinatown. Would love to find them locally...

Thanks.

Joy Luck Pavilion has them sizzling at the reception area on weekends so you won't miss them... some call it carrot cake because the direct translation for turnip is literally white carrot in chinese.

Go forth, stuff your face and be happy!
