Actually I think it's going to be more like 5:30 or 6AM, but early nonetheless. |

Just had a sandwich at Manny's and was told that they'd be opening the Village Diner in South Orange at 6AM. |

Actually, I heard that they will be opening at 5:57:03 AM EST. Just in case there are any sticklers. |

Sorry, MHD... I just stopped by for lunch: *The place looks great, staff all wearing "Village Diner" shirts... *If you want water, ask for it (conservation!)... *Terrific menu... *Plenty of Typical Opening Day Confusion, but the staff seems pretty sharp, and should overcome... *Manny, Angie, et al very anxious to please... *No fistfights in the kitchen yet... *Excellent medium-rare pattie melt, served open over nicely grilled onions... *Fries could be less bland, and even better-done... *Good coffee... *Initial assessment: Tell your friends, and go see for yourself... -s.

I don't know about good but Janet (waitress) on the night shift at the Echo Queen diner (Mountainside, I think, on Rt22 East) makes a decent one. |

Second the Syd's rec. They make their egg creams the traditional way, with U-Bet Syrup.

OK, maybe I am totally clueless, but wasn't Syd's in the Millburn Mall? I had such a jones for an egg cream that I actually went over there today. I didn't see Syd's. |

They've GOT to be there! That's my hot dog connection! I hope they didn't get taken out in all the rearranging of stores going on over there! Now I gotta go out and look! |

With all the rearranging of stores, the hot dogs ended up over at Cold Stone -- watch for new ice cream flavors!

The awning is down over Syd's - so it looks closed but it had an OPEN sign in the window when I drove by on my way to Manny's for my birthday dinner. |

Syds is open at the Millburn Mall. They are at the right end while facing the building. There is construction being done in front of the store. I think that during the rearranging/closing of stores and addition of Staples, they are probably going to be updating the 60s facade. |

Ahhh...OK, so I didn't see the sign and didn't look closely enough. I'll have to go back. The egg cream cannot wait. |
