Wanted to take the spouse there instead of the usual Manhattan celebratory dinner

Any suggestions on what to / what not to order from those who've been there?

Thanks

When I was there, they were running a venison special that was nothing short of sublime. It was November though so it's possible that it might not be available now.

Based on the good reviews, Mrs. 37 and I decided to celebrate our 1st anniversary there this weekend :-)

We'll be there Sunday. If you're going Sunday we'll be two couples, one person with a beard. We love the place and eat there all the time. It doesn't matter what you order it'll be great. We think it's clearly one of the top restaurants in the state.

Happy Anniversary Project 37! - Is that the project you've been working on for 37 years?

Have fun. We're hoping to try Lorenas in the next few weeks. Let us know what you ordered!

Thanks, everyone, for your good wishes!

Whew, just got back from a wonderfully decadent meal at Lorena's. I'm not a food writer by any means, and I'm a bit beat to attempt something in-depth, but here's how it went down.

Round 1 - Appetizers:

p37 - Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras de Canard, Vanilla Scented Fruit Relish,
White Port and Ginger Reduction

Mrs. p37 - Butter Braised Maine Lobster, Potato Gnocchi, Melted Leek,
Black Truffle Butter

Winner: p37. *GENEROUS* portion of perfectly seared foie gras, and the fruit relish was brilliant. That's not to say the lobster was anything short of sublime, but if I was going to do decadent, it had to be with a capital D.

Round 2 - Entrees:

p37 - Atlantic Halibut, Lobster and Porcini Mushroom Hash,
Cauliflower Purée

Mrs. p37 - South Australian Barramundi Fish, Roasted Beets, Braised Endive,
Orange Confit, Horseradish Emulsion

Winner: Mrs. p37. The halibut was simply prepared with a light crust and the hash had generous portions of lobster, but for me, it couldn't compete with the flavor of the barramundi/orange confit combination.

Round 3 - Dessert

p37 - Caramel Filled "Crèpes" with Tahitian Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

Mrs. p37 - Warm Soft Chocolate Cake with Orange Zest and Pistachio Ice Cream

Winner: p37. The sugar-crusted (!) crepes were bursting with caramel and won it right away for me. The cake might have been the winner if it had a molten chocolate center. The orange zest was really good, but being in celebratory mode, I wanted something more rich.

We really enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and the service was top-notch. Everything we had was really delicious (and the presentation was gorgeous). Hopefully it won't be too long before we can get back there. We couldn't have asked for a better way to celebrate our first wedding anniversary in our new hometown!

Side note: A great day overall, as we'd spent the earlier part enjoying good food and good conversation with our new neighbors (MOL came up, but nobody "outed" their online personas - although we think LilLB was our host and that Shasta was there...?).

I enjoyed the Barramundi, too. I was curious about the fish and found a photo and this detail: "Barramundi are interesting because they all begin their lives as males and after about five years change into females! They breed in estuaries and return to their original rivers after each breeding season."

P37, by the way, I should have mentioned that I thoroughly enjoyed reading your "impromptu" review of Lorena's. I found it to be excellent. I also recently dined at Lorena's with out-of-town (foody-type) friends and we all had a wonderful experience. Lorena's is a gem!

Thanks, Shasta :-) Honestly, I'm glad the menu was up on their website, as I'd have been completely lost without the cut 'n paste!

It was very nice to meet you and your husband, too. And LilLB, fear not - your secret identity is safe with me...
