I am thinking of looking into a Caribbean villa rental for thanksgiving week. Should be somewhere fairly close (direct flights, under 4 hours), where we can get a nice big house and invite friends and fmaily for an island T-day. Any thoughts? |

St. Martin, French side. Have been going for several years, with friends and kids. Direct flights from JFK on American (~3.5/4 hours). Simply awesome: beaches, food, culture, views, vibe. We've been using St. Martin Villa Rentals and they've been great; the villas, spectacular. Here's the contact info; they have details and photos of villas online. http://www.stmartin.com Keslie Meyers Reservations Manager +599 545 4330 26 Beacon Hill Road St. Maarten Antilles Netherlands Enjoy! I once stayed at the Sun Village in the DR (northern coast). I stayed in a regular room but the villas looked really nice. |

Depends on what you're looking for in a 'villa' (term used to describe everything in the Caribbean from $10k/week including staff, to a 1-room shack on a beach), but I had great luck finding a rental in Barbados last year on vrbo.com. Many lstings in the islands... |

Casa de Campo, DR. This is in the southeast corner of the country near La Romana. I stayed in a Villa a couple of years ago, Beautiful little house (4br), maids, gold carts, the works. Nearby to the famous Altos De Chavon. Very afforable for a group sharing expenses. |

We stayed in a gorgeous villa near Tulum, Mexico. Right on the water and snorkeling directly in front of the property. Not far from Play del Carmen and most of the large Mayan temples. We had a spectacular week there. Here is a link to the villa. Look under accomodations for other gorgeous villas in the same area. Beware though....a hurricane went thru there last year. Most of the villas were ok, but the pictures may not be current and could be misleading. http://www.locogringo.com/tankah/villagummerson.html?name=Villa%20Gummerson |

So SUlly I have been searching for a villa to rent. The one you show here looks beautiful. Could you tell me about the beach conditions? From the photos it looks very rocky with lots of coral. Is it a swimable beach? thanks |

There are basically no waves to speak of. There is a reef break about a half-mile out. The bottom is not sandy. Sort of rocky. However, about 10 yards in the water is deep enough to swim and it's calm enough too. The great thing about it is that there is a cenote that empties into the ocean right there and it attracts large schools of fish, so the snorkeling is pretty darn good. The water is also calm enough to kayak out to the reef and snorkel there if you are comfortable with dragging the kayak on your snorkel adventure. There are spectacular sandy beaches not far away in Tulum. There are also lots of cenotes for breathtaking snorkeling and scuba adventures. In fact there is a cenote behind the villa where you can swim and kayak thru the mangroves. The following is a picture of the Tulum beach. I'm not really sure how to attach it, so I hope this works:
