I have been told my meatloaf recipe is the best (and I hate to cook). Buy a package of mixed chopped meat (beef/veal/pork). Chop a large onion and fry them until the onions carmellize. Mix into the meatloaf mixture (in a large bowl) one egg, can of tomatoe paste, Mrs. Dash, garlic powder. (the measurements for these are your choice). Some bread crumbs and the carmellized onions. Mush it all together, add more breadcrumbs if too wet. Form it into a football shape in a throwaway pan. Cook at 350 degrees for about 1.5 hrs. Put a chopstick or something in the center to test for doneness. If it is very warm to the lip touch it is done. Take chopped broccoli from a package and after slightly cooking, mix with cooked orzo. Fast, little prep, and down home good. This is easy, homey, delicous and |

Take-out from Terra (if in fact they still do this--they did it when it was American Fare)? New World Catering might also be worth checking out. Both these options take the pressure off you to pull-off a spectacular meal. Just a thought. |

A lot of "romance" is in the atmosphere. Use a tablecloth, the good china, dim the lights, light a candle, play soft music, and pour some wine. No matter what you eat, it will feel like a special occasion. We sometimes do this after the kids are in bed. Otherwise, we'd almost never use the good china! |

simple and romantic? steamed lobster or crab cakes with some corn and a salad...or some other lobster or crab based dinner (lobster pot pie; a great salad with lobster -- Ina Garten has one with bacon and avacado and blue cheese; crab and basil risotto, etc.) finger foods (cheeses, pate, olives, some really good thin sliced ham like a prosciutto), bread rounds or crackers and some good wine (get a sparkling wine), some nice fresh fruit like figs or grapes...one doesnt even need a table..in fact, one might not even want to be at a table. |

I like Hank's idea of some finger foods, plus... Shrimp cocktail (with spicy homemade cocktail sauce) Risotto with mushrooms and peas (creamy and satisfying) if you want a more substantial dish, easy to make ahead. A crazy salad: greens with wasabi peas, blueberries, gorgonzola cheese, candied pecans, whatever else Maybe some chocolate truffles, but hopefully by dessert you've left the table.

simple dessert suggestion: clean some strawberries add a light touch of "regular sugar" and a splash of balsamic vinegar. marinade for 2 hours. upon serving, grind some fresh black pepper over berries. |

I'm with Hank - Freeman's will cook your lobster ahead of time and crack it for you at no extra cost. There's an amazing cheese that I've only been able to find at the Wine Library, "Pierre Robert" - a creamy soft cow cheese with a little kick, but not cloying or too sharp - serve that with a crusty bread and a salad made from new greens after the meal - yum and it's not too filling. As long as you're at the wine library, maybe pick up a nice dessert wine and a few truffles at the end of the table. |

I used to make complicated romantic meals for my husband, then I learned that true romance to him is a thick steak with glass of red wine and a loaded baked potato. So simple and quick to make (I make my potatoes in the microwave to great success). If your intended is that type of guy/girl, and you normally eat healthy, this is a delicious naughty thrill. FOOOD has lovely cakes that are a nice size for two as well. |
