Took the family to Burnette Barbeque on Springfield Ave on Friday. Wife and I love barbeque ribs and have been looking forward to trying this place out since it opened. We sit down with the kids and I zoom in on the ribs item on the menu. We get two orders and spaghetti for the kids off the children's menu. Now maybe I should have suspected something when the waitress didn't know what I was talking about when I asked if they had baby back ribs; and maybe if I wasn't preoccupied with keeping the 3 year old in check I would have noticed that the art on the walls was not what you might expect from a southern rib joint; and maybe the big family at the next table speaking Portuguese should have alerted me that I was missing something. But no. It was only when the waitress (eventually) set the huge plate of pale, chopped up, sauce-less mystery meat before me did it begin to dawn on me that I wasn't in Kansas (or Memphis, Texas, Carolina, Chicago or Louisiana, for that matter). Huge dissapointment. Oh well.
BTW the big Portuguese family was served with yummy looking platter of chorizo. In the unlikely event I ever go back, that's what I would order.
The ribs-- truly the worse I have ever eaten.

We had that same confusion the first time. As it happens, I'm ok with their style here and there, but also prefer the U.S. style. If you want more traditional Southern stuff, try Church's Chicken down the street (if you're headed towards Home Depot, it's on the left). Their chicken is pretty darned good -- I believe they have ribs etc. cooked the way you seek. Also, people around here are very fond of a catering/take out place called Heart and Soul in South Orange. They have a web site, and while we've not yet tried, they seem to be the Southern style too.

Dave's BBQ on 22 in Mountainside has great traditional southern ribs. It is one of the few chains where I enjoy eating!

AKL, I had the same experience. When I see BBQ I just assume down south, slow grilled, smoked, smothered ribs. I am sure I would have ordered differently if I knew they were Portuguese. I have heard great things about the shop but placed my order thinking about some down home cooking.

Burnett bbq is on springfield at princeton. nice place but the food is bit too salty.

We usually go to Nunzio's (argentine bbq place on springfield ave too but in vauxhall (the lovely town you go through on your way to home depot). It's past Millburn Ave.

Nunzio's is so cheap and the food is good -- not amazing but you'll have a decent meal) try the order of chicken with veggies or rice/friens. it will feed the whole family and it's about $11-12.

and, Buen Provecho! (that's Bon Appétit in Spanish)

Hands down chef Jessie at Heart and Soul cooks up the best lip smackin', juicy, meat fallin' off the bone ribs. If you truly want a rib fix, that is the place to go...when they are open. Call first.

Nunzio's black beans are the best around. I don't eat BBQ (don't like BBQ sauce) but TS & friends love the ribs & chicken.

On the flip side, I avoided Burnett for the longest time because I didn't want BBQ.

Tiffany's has the best BBQ ribs. All the way down Vauxhall Rd. in Union at the Rt. 22 intersection.
