MC, the search engine doesn't work reliably on MOL but if you get lucky you will find the many topics discussing local restaurants in the area. This topic comes up VERY frequently, and all the old posts are archived. Also there is always this list: http://maplewoodonline.com/restaurant/ |

Great food (high quality and healthy) at reasonable prices can be had at Caribbean Cuisine in South Orange. They serve Trinidadian style food which is a mix of traditions combining elements of Indian, Chinese and Spanish cooking. They're on First Street in South Orange. Basically you'd take South Orange Ave to Valley Street, turn right onto Valley and take your first left onto First St. They're on the right side. Here's their website. http://www.caribbeancuisine.net/ |

I think Village Trattoria has some of the best fish dishes in the area. Bring a bottle of wine. |

Quincys place is good too - I went there for the first time last week. I think it is on Valley Street in West Orange, close to CVS. I am looking forward to trying Heart and Soul and Caribbean Cuisine in SO, so if you try them, let me know! |

Cafe Monet in Millburn. Village Trattoria in Maplewood. Begum Palace in Madison (great Indian food -- try the buffet on Sundays and Wednesdays). |

We were you, exactly 2 years ago, and having frequented every single establishment in a 10 mile radius, here's my personal favorites: Italian Upscale- Basilico's, in Millburn...hands down our FAVORITE special occasion restaurant. Group/Friends Date Night- Huntley Tavern, Summit...Great for out door porch dining in Summer, great for Fireside Dining in the winter. Great wine bar too. Chinese- Ginger Taste....Delivers too Sushi- Samurai, in either Maplewood or Millburn. Delivers too. Pizza- Franks, followed by Pizzetta (Millburn) Party (pre reserved)- Terra- Good food, reasonable, very accomodating. Steak/Seafood- Village Cellar. Most "City like" feel to it. Home Cookin/Chix- Churches...it's every bit as good as its reputation on MOL suggests it is. I went for the first time 2 wks ago, and am sad I waited so long. And there's a killer Crepe place on Main Street (I think) in Millburn which is a great alternative to diners on Sat/Sun brunch.

I second Churches! A great find it was. Leroy, Judy adn their daughter are always there. Jusy is from down south while Leroy is from Trinidad. Now that's a perfect culinary mix if there ever was one! Jusy can talk a blue streak, so if you have hungry people waiting for their food at home don't engage her in too much conversation. Both are very sweet. I'm usually the only white face when I'm there, but that's how I like it, as that's usually a sign I'm about to eat great food for not much money. Also Joe's Pizza on Springfield Ave just east of Chruches has the best pizza I've had in the area. It's an institution the likes of Reservoir. It was recommended to me by a SO lifer and is reminsicent of an IHOP architecturally, but the pie is highly addictive. i think they put something in thier dough to a) enable you to eat 3X what you normally would be able to and b) keep you coming back time and time again. Caribbean Cuisine is excellent although I often wonder how they can stay in business because I've never seen more than one person in there. Neelam on South Orange Ave is excellent albeit a little pricy as compared to the city. I've gone to Samurai Sushi in MW a couple of times and liked it. There's this Southern food restaurant called Niecy's (sp?) in South Orange tucked behind the main strip to the north. They do a hell of a business and the food was excellent when we were there. The prices, however are much steeper than Chruches and I don't mind dining at home. In fact, i prefer it thank to my little kids. |

Just a little info/maybe a question? When we were at Toro Loco on Saturday night Village Cellar was closed/dark/no occupado. Went by Village Cellar on Sunday afternoon and there was a party goin on inside!!! Confused, we went to the door and there was a sign posting new "summer hours" and that they would be closed on Tuesdays. Not open Monday of this week. Haven't seen a soul in there since Sunday afternoon....I'm just a little confused. Anyone know what's going on over there???? ps-sorry to hijack the thread.... |

Our favorites are Niecy's in South Orange. The best down home cooking around. Also Terra in Maplewood. The chef changes the menu often and I have never been dissapointed in the food. BYOB. |

New Japanese place in Millburn across from the train station on Essex Street. Sakura. We used to go to Samurai Sushi but it has gotten too busy and is very crowded. The atmosphere is calmer at Sakura. Good value. Love the combo boxes (bento) |
