The penalty kick was unjustified but the US just did not deliver the goods this time around. There was something lacking in the way they played and did not even look close to the form that they'd displayed in 2002.

I am rooting for Brazil, always have since I was a kid...

Jason: I was at Mulligan's in Hoboken (on First St, v. close to the train station) on Tuesday and it had a brilliant atmosphere...just like being in a pub back home. The place was packed to the rafters with friendly English expats and had about half a dozen TV sets in there. I got there at 2.30pm and didn't leave until about 9.15pm!

Before the game they were playing all the football songs like "Vindaloo", "World in Motion" etc. and had the Sky pre-match commentary and news from Blighty...and I'd bought an English newspaper from the kiosk just near the PATH entrance.

The owner is a Chelsea fan apparently and Hoboken Cricket Club is based there.

Only problem is the game is early on Sunday morning...I want to go there again but would have to get up early to catch the train...don't want to drink and drive.

If anyone is interested in going send me a Private Message!

Tulip,

you are already starting to waffle?

The best game of the cup will be Friday the 30th. Germany - Argentina. That one will be quite the drama.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow, when Sweden and the Dutch will be send home.

Deutschland, Deutschland hoi, hoi, hoi.

I'm not only waffling, I think I should have included Spain in my list of contenders.

Watching it on a Spanish channel (don't have Hi Def TV so can't see it on ESPN 2, the normal ESPN is showing tennis from Wimbledon :-( ) but I do have the commentary in English on my PC from the Sun online so have muted the sound on the telly!

Oz doing amazingly well...Kewell not playing due to a groin strain and Italy had a player sent off and down to 10 men... now Totti has been brought on for Italy (fresh legs) with less than 15 mins of normal time left.

Guess it will go to extra time..?

It's so exciting! Go Aussies!

Very bad call by the ref. Unfortunate for the Socceroos, but they played 50 minutes a man up and basically did nothing with the advantage. Even their coach commented that they themselves are to blame for losing the match.

Well, I guess we - went! Thanks for watching, folks! I piked and went to sleep (it was very cold and the door fell off our fireplace so I couldn't make a fire...don't ask!). I gather it was exciting, and I'm proud that they got so far. Apparently Kewell's injury is gout-related (in the groin??!!)

It's been great for the game here in Australia, pulling mainstream crowds and dragging the game out of 'wog-dom'. Trouble is, we'll go back to only reporting Aussie Rules and Rugby now and within 12 months it will feel marginal again. Oh well - at least they got an overseas trip, eh?!

England v. Portugal ...

Portugal will be missing key playmaker Deco, and a solid defensive player Costinha, and several other key players are playing with yellow cards. That will make things tough for Portugal to play up to potential. But C.Ronaldo will almost certainly be healthy by Saturday's game, and England haven't been playing very well this tournament either. So this should make for a very evenly matched game that could go either way. The last time England and Portugal met was in the Euro 2004 quarterfinals, and after double overtime Portugal won in a penalty shoot-out.

Viva Portugal!

Now this is all screwed up, but it is the way it is since the orignal groups were picked in a lottery. I mean look at this, the two quarter final games played tomorrow are Germany - Argentina and England - Portugal. Two of the top teams in the competition will play each other and two average teams will do the same. Now one of the top teams will get eliminated and one of the average teams will make it into the semi finals, it's just so sad.
I mean honestly, nobody here really believes that either England or Portugal will make it into the final, but Germany or (hopefully) Argentina will be sent home tomorrow and thus forgo a chance for the game for 3rd place.

Not since 66 and not for a long time to come.
I mean come on, that ball for the 3-2 win in overtime never made it across the line, it was a gift by the referee to the host nation.

ahah, Earlster, that's funny.
Sincerely I think England hasn't been playing that well in any games this World Cup. But Portugal is not in great shape for this game, so it really could go either way.

I do think Argentina will win Germany though. And either Portugal or England will loose to Brazil.
I have my money on the final game being Argentina vs Brazil and Brazil winning.

But we'll see!
All this games will be exciting to watch.

England's at 11 a.m. Saturday. If Bunny's can accommodate an outside TV as I am with dog, I will be there. Since that's unlikely to happen, I'll probably watch at least the 2nd half at home before going up to Dad's. As a novice, I can't make an informed prediction on who will prevail. So I won't.

Prizes to England for the most enthusiastic supporters - we have to believe they can do it - now lets just see if we get the bloody ball in the goal !

Unfortunatley with toddlers we have to watch and cheer them on from home instead of a bar, but we're there in spririt!!

Hats off to England for playing a great game, especially when they went down a man in the second half. England put up a heck of a fight and showed their determination and skill.

I never like to see a game go to penalty kicks, and I can't believe that another quarterfinal between England and Portugal ends in penalty kicks ... and Ricardo again wins the game for Portugal.

Now it's time for Portugal to face red-hot France who've just knocked out Brazil. The "jogo bonito" continues - just this time it's coming from the other side of the Atlantic ...

Viva Portugal!

I can't believe Rooney. How stupid can you be? Kicking in the crotch right in front of the ref, and then pushing again right in front of the ref?
England played quite excellent considering they were a man down, however it's their (Rooneys) own fault.

Ricardo was just outstanding, catching 3 out of 4, that's unheard of.

Go Germany on Tuesday, send the pizza baker home.

I didn't see Rooney do that but heard all about it afterwards... stupid boy..

Reading about Beckham resigning as manager, I was stunned to see that S.G.E was telling people not to blame Rooney and that he was the "superstar"..... i don't care HOW good someone is at football, if you can't control yourself you have no business being on a team as you will only let them down - the Portugal match case in point.

It actually looked more like the guy landed ON Rooney (why Rooney was upset no doubt). Portugal was taking so many dives it looked like a swimming competition.

Renaldo wasn't the one to step on a man's package, so that photo should be of Rooney. Rooney has always been a hothead and should be aware that his reputation precedes him. A more mature player would not have put England in that position.

Perhaps England should just stop picking Man U players... because for all their talent they are cursed to do something stupid which knocks the team out. Beckham, Rooney, etc. Should have played Walcott instead! 8)
