All will agree that one of the fabulous fundamental treats of childhood (and adulthood!) is a trip to the ice cream parlor! My 6 year old son is dangerously allergic to many things including dairy (all milk products). Not lactose intolerant, allergic. Happily, he has been able to share this basic treat with other people because the Maplewood Ice Cream Parlor has had cherry ice, the only non-dairy product we are aware they have ever had. We really need another non-dairy product to have available for people like my son who cannot eat anything that contains milk. Recently, unfortunately, cherry ice was replaced. It was replaced by lemon ice which is too sour for my son and the loss was taken very badly; he cannot share a trip to the ice cream parlor with sister and friends and another little piece of exclusion has descended. Michael, the owner, said customers requested the lemon flavor. He replaced the cherry ice because to replace a better selling ice cream flavor would be a hardship. He also told me he cannot find a non-dairy (soy milk, rice milk, etc..) product in three gallon tubs but that he would stock it if he could. May I respectfully request that those of you who share our desire for a non-dairy product ask for it at the Maplewood Ice Cream Parlor? Also, please let me know here if you know of any non-dairy frozen treats available in 3 gallon tubs that Michael could obtain. I know other people, kids and adults, who can't consume dairy; let's make it known that there are enough people who want a non-dairy product and would buy it on a regular basis. Also, hey, if you like cherry ice, speak up! Many thanks and be well, all. David |

David, that's sad. How about Italian ices? In the summer Arturo's usually has a selection of flavors. Speaking of Italian ices, in Staten Island there is an institution called Ralph's Ices. Huge selection of flavors, many non-dairy and certainly many with dairy. I know they sell wholesale because many businesses carry them. It's not too far, right near the Bayonne Bridge. Here is their info. Maybe the Village Ice Cream Parlor could sell some of their amazing frozen treats! Below are the places in NJ that sell Ralph's. I'm sure my fellow Staten Islanders would agree they put out a fine product. Corporate Office 501 Port Richmond Ave. Staten Island, NY (718) 448-0853 Bayville 66 Rt 9 South Bayville, NJ (732) 244-8450 Howell 4730 Rt. 9 South Howell, NJ (732) 363-2224 Lanoka Harbor 415 N. Is this the old Baskin Robbins? Whatever happened to 31 flavors? Couldn't Mike keep a few cherry ices in the little cups in the freezer for your son? How much space could that possibly take up? I remember the cola Italian Ices when I was a kid. Loved them. |

There are 2 great places to get ices nearby in Union. There's the Ice Hut on Stuyvesant Ave. on the way into Union Center. A few blocks away is Rita's Ices (where the old KFC used to be). Both are excellent and have a wide variety of non-dairy selections. |

Thank you all so much for your help; I am looking forward to taking my boy to some of these suggested places! JTA: Yes, it is the old 31 flavors. Lick well, all! David
