How bad is it for you in the realm of salad dressings? as bad as creamy blue cheese or ranch? somewhere in the middle? just curious....

I'd say better - olive oil is a healthier fat than what's likely in creamy dressings...guess there could be crap in store bought, but it's super easy to make

Nowhere NEAR as horrible as blue cheese (the worst offender for fat and calories) and creamy dressings. Its a healthy salad topping, as long as you dont use more than 2 tablespoons or so.

Just pay attention to serving size, as Boomie said. The sugar content in balsamic can be high.

Best salad dressing tip that I have heard is to dip your fork in the dressing before "spearing" the salad on your fork...then eat...you would be amazed at how much less dressing you use.

And how much less you taste, sadly!

Boomie- Have you ever tried it this way? You would be amazed at how good the taste actually is.
Ciao!

I dip my fork in creamy dressinigs like BGS suggested. Been doing it for years. I like the taste...really, really hate it when restaurants douse my salad in dressing. You could also try dipping lightly (that part is important!) with your fork flat in the dressing after putting some salad on your fork. Then eat the salad with the tines next to your tongue for more bang for your buck.

I leave out the "vinaigrette" part and just put balsamic vinegar on my salad alone - no fat and so few calories not even worth counting. I put a little in a mini container (like someone in the other thread said, a little goes a long way), add some fresh ground pepper and a little dried basil and bring it as my own salad dressing for lunch during the week.

I agree with Strings. I can use Basalmic Vinegar all alone on salad. On the other hand, pour on some nice olive oil in addition to the vinegar and your good to go. I like vinegarette, but sometimes oil and vinegar poured on separately is totally fine for me.

Make your own and eat all you want!

Add to taste:
Balsamic vinegar
Olive Oil
tsp or so of dijon mustard
tsp or so of honey (or you can omit this)
chopped shallots
salt & pepper

SUPER easy to make and you can adjust the olive oil and honey so that it's low fat and lo cal. Keeps in the fridge for a good amount of time too.

Strings-that sounds good-the pepper and basil!

Hank-I use balsamic vinegar ALL the time as a marinade-it's great! Never tried it with strawberries, but will soon since it sounds delicious!

Dego-that sounds really good and I will give it a try this weekend. I would leave out the honey though-not a big fan of honey!

Hank/Lucy - One of my favorite easy salads that I make is spring mix greens, quartered strawberries, slivered almonds, grilled chicken and balsamic vinegar w/the pepper and basil. I'm sure adding some crumbled bleu or feta cheese would be delicious, too.
