I've been telling people about it for a few years. It is absolutely delicious. I almost feel guilty that we like it better than Church's... It's a happy day in our house when the answer to "What's for dinner?" is "Pathmark Chicken!" |

The plantains are my favorite side. Even the baked and roasted chicken is terrific. |

Chicken, awesome. Plantains, love em. Try the mashed potatoes. They're so good you don't even need gravy. The only problem with Pathmark deli is the line, it's hit or miss with them. |

Thanks for the tip! Definitely will try them. I'm embarassed... but the best fried chicken I've found locally is actually in the cafeteria in St Barnabas Hospital in Livingston. Sigh... |

Hmm. And here I thought I couldn't trust their premade food. We'll have to give it a shot. |

Wow! I's surprised I wasn't attacked for posting this! I like that you can see in the PM kitchen--see it's not filthy. We had the plantains, and chicken. The hubby ate their "bread puddin," a la mode, for desert. He said it was delish. I had no room. The roasted chicken pieces are also really well seasoned, however sometimes it's overcooked. The fried chicken is always a safe bet. We had Church's once, and bland bland bland.... |

The first time I decided NOT to make my own food for my kids' birthday party, I ordered a huge tray of Pathmark fried chicken. It was a huge success. If I still lived in SO/MA area, I'd do it every year! Scrumptious. |

It'll do in a pinch, but as a fried chicken connoisseur from the deep south, I find it average at best. Still, it's a lot better than I've had at other places locally. |

That's the problem. I really haven't found great fried chicken, although I haven't tried Niecy's and Church's is hit or miss sometimes. Shall we arrange a field trip to Sylvia's in Harlem? |

Church's is the best fried chicken I've ever had. And I've had far too much fried chicken in my life. |

It was late night (by suburban standards at least -- after 9PM), my pregnant wife craved fried chicken and ribs. I said don't worry I got you covered and I went out to Irvington to buy what she was craving. When she took one bite into the rib, she almost barfed. She was unable to even swallow one piece. The ribs were of unknown origin (we later joked that maybe it came from a human cadaver). The chicken, she claimed was mostly edible but UNBELIEVABLY salty. I didn't know where I was going, and I have to say this experience was possibly one of the stupidest mistakes I've made since moving back to NJ 3 years ago. At least it only cost $5.50. I'm also glad she didn't get horribly sick. What was I thinking? |

I wasn't sure it mattered. Is anyone nearly as stupid as me that they would be going into Irvington at night for a huge container of super-low quality, inedible food for $5.50? The food stunk up the car and the odor lingered for a few days. It was on Springfield Avenue a few miles in on the right side on a corner (after Lyons Ave). It was named SOMETHING Chicken I believe, if that is even remotely helpful? |

I love Church's too. I haven't had Pathmark's but their rotisserie chicken is great. The best around, IMHO. |

Have you tried Costco's, Jeff? It's quite good--large and plump, nicely seasoned, always juicy. While I found their brunch overpriced, especially when I mostly ate the fried ckicken, I really enjoyed the way the Village Cellar prepared theirs. Best I've had in awhile...has anyone else had it? |

It isn't the chain, just a local joint that is really good. It is on Springfield Avenue in Vauxhall, on the left as you head from Maplewood toward the highway. |

Now they don't have that great music there, Paffmark doesn't have the same attraction for me.

Reingold bases his food-shopping decision on the music!
Ya know, you can shop with your iPod on, and every store will be equal!!

The music was one of the few good attributes of that store. That leaves just about nothing. I'll give credit for the fried chicken. The ipod doesn't allow several strangers in the aisle to sing along together, which did happen a year or so ago. Why am I defending myself against Aquaman!?

This thread made me go to Pathmark to try this chicken. Not only was it the first time I stepped foot in to this pathmark - but in any pathmark. I am a shoprite loyalist. anyway. word as gotten out and there was a decent crowd there last night about 8 people and all wanting huge buckets of chicken. No one was cooking at home last night I guess. I have to say. The chicken was worth the wait. Crispy on the outside - moist on the inside - flavor all around. and not a bad price. Next I am going to try Church's so I can compare. |

There is always a crowd on Sunday afternoons for the fried chicken. One of the great things that no one has mentioned is the price - they have a special on the fried chicken practically every week - it's cheap AND delicious! |
