Has anyone heard any more news on when the former Dasti's will open as an Indian Restaurant?

I do not know about the Maplewood Indian restaurant, however, in Summit (where I work) the former Troast's bakery is beconing an Indian restaurant. Do not know when the opening is. It is supposed to be an upscale eatery.

Just what we need, YET ANOTHER upscale eatery.

Maybe the reason why people "don't go out to eat in the suburbs" is not because they have kids, but because all the restaurants price gouge us. I don't want to spend $20 on a bowl of pasta. I don't want to spend $15 on a bowl of seasoned chickpeas. I don't want to spend $15 for a vegetarian burrito.

My sentiments exactly, I'm afraid.

I agree completely Alley.

There's such a need for mid-range restaurants too. Places more upscale than Roman Gourmet or Tinga in Millburn, but where you don't feel uncomfortable bringing the kids.

Sort of on the order of the Broadway Diner (Broadway Grill?) in Summit or Cianci in Montclair (formerly Suzettes)

Yep, it's gone. My mom lives in Summit, and I always enjoyed stopping at Trost's.

The new Indian place in Summit is going to be called DabbaWalla, I think. It wasn't open when I was there last weekend.

I'm looking forward to the Indian restaurant in Maplewood, too! I even walked by it today to see what was happening, but you can't see in the doors. Hope it opens soon!

Tinga is already more upscale than Roman Gourmet, but realistically how much more upscale can you get and still feel comfortable bringing the kids?

José Tejas has full service and is surely kid-friendly, but get even a bit more quiet and I think you're hitting the limit.

Speaking of which, i was at the Maple Leaf Diner the other day for the first time in a while. $7.45 for chicken fingers off of the KIDS menu! Do people really pay that and then say "this was a good value, i think we'll do it again"?

Sorry i have nothing to add about the pending Indian restaurant... I'm just still a little irked by such chicken finger injustice.

To answer the original question -- July 15th. Or so I've heard.

There's a reason that the food prices are so expensive. It's called making one's rent. The rents are so high in the Village it's the only way they would last. I do admit that $7.45 for chix fingers is too high. Especially off the kids menu at a diner. I think they are like $5 at the Parkwood.
