Saturday was my daughter's bat mitzvah ceremony. We had the reception at Ethical Culture Society in Maplewood, a lovely place with reasonable rates for rental. We catered from various sources: Kings, Short Hills Homestyle Cuisine, Maplewood Wegmans, Woodbridge Food of Our Own Design, Maplewood La Bonbonniere, South Plainfield Crane's Deli, Maplewood Rented chairs through Kings, Short Hills. Hired help from Kings, Short Hills. Excellent staff! I highly recommend all of these places, especially the Maplewood ones and Kings in Short Hills.

May I join in the wishes for Mazal Tov for a special girl, sure to be a gem in humanity's treasure house if the little I know of her parents is anything to go by? It sounds as if all went exceedingly well, which is as much credit to her and her hard work and strength of spirit as to anyone else's contribution as well. And may I also say how refreshing it is to see someone so graciously acknowledge publicly how so many local businesses could pull together to ensure such a joyous occasion remains so pleasurable and memorable? Mazal Tov and well done, all round! |

Thank you, r2boy and Joanne. It is a considerable body of work, isn't it? My daughter, age 14, started the whole process late, in 6th grade. We hired a tutor and she caught up quickly. She just finished 8th grade yesterday, which is to say her bat mitzvah was a year late. She's a really good singer, so she literally led the service. The rabbi stepped back and hardly did a thing. My daughter's voice filled the whole place. I had high expectations, and she exceeded them! After the afternoon party, we had a dance party just for the kids. We hired a 7th grader as a DJ. The party was at the Madison Elks Lodge, from 8pm to midnight. We had 78 of her closest friends. Busy day for us, to say the least.

It sounds really lovely - I'm so glad she enjoyed it!!!! so often these occasions are really done for parents' benefit... My BIL actually made his barmy on the same day that his son made his. George didn't have one at 13 as he was born and raised in Hungary under the Communists and religion doesn't mean that much to him. When Paul decided he wanted a bar mitzvah, with less than 9 months to go!, George said OK and did everything he could to help it happen. Then, about a month or so beforehand, Paul quietly asked him if he would be allowed to make aliyah if he had not formally made his bar mitzvah. (He had cleverly avoided the issue just before his wedding as my dad died unexpectedly and so all the plans changed although the wedding still took place) George asked Paul's teacher and rabbi who were both very supportive - and while the vast majority of people in the shul that day would have had no idea, George made his bar mitzvah reading the prayers and a short parshah aged in his 40s. His mother cried. His wife hit him on the nsoe with sweets. His proud son couldn't stop digging him in the ribs all through the luncheon! |
