I need some impartial opinions. We are flying to Sedona on Friday for a week of hiking and relaxation. Sedona's on fire - or rather the forest right next to Sedona. It's 5% contained and at risk of jumping over the highway to a residential area. They've completely closed all local hiking trails. The air quality is poor, but Sedona is still open for business as are all surrounding resorts. We are staying about 8 miles outside of Sedona in a timeshare in Oak Creek Village. If we cancel the trip we lose about $1000. My husband thinks we should still go and make the best of it since if we stay here and do day or overnight trips it will not be relaxing and certainly will not feel like a vacation. I certainly agree with that point of view, but also see it as a lot of effort to get there and then be vacationing in an area in crisis. Granted we can take trips to Flagstaff, Prescott and find hiking trails further away from Sedona. (We went to the Grand Canyon 2 years ago, so don't want to repeat that.) Also, Sedona is having a heat wave (over 100 degrees), which doesn't sound appealing - but it cools down at night to the 60's. Should we stay home or should we go?

Did you call the resort and see what they can tell you about the situation there? If it's close to or in the path of the fire, you may not be permitted to go there (and who would want to?).

If it were me, I'd definitely go ahead and fly out (I know what you mean about day trips), then drive farther north to some of the Utah, northern AZ parks: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks, north rim of GC. All gorgeous, and mostly at a high enough altitude to avoid the worst heat. Alternatively, going south, I bet Tucson would have some deals at this time of year, if you can handle 100++.

MJC gives good advice. Do some homework and find alternative locations within reasonable driving distance just in case. It may cost you some $$,but, if you can afford it, it's better than having to evacuate or stay inside because the air is so bad.

Re: the heatwave. Will you be able to find things to do if you can't hike during the day?

If it were my vacation, I might look around and see if there are alternative, affordable places and kiss off the $1k.

Thanks MJC & Greentree. Both of your advice gave me some perspective. The resort said everything was ok (except for the hiking), but other calls were not as positive (bad air quality, smoky, etc.) Checking into other hiking areas in AZ showed that all trails are closed until the drought conditions change. So, I then looked into other timeshares that we could get (ignoring the thousand that we've lost) and booked a week at a resort in Virginia that has a new waterpark (kids are thrilled) and hiking everywhere. A couple of hours spent changing/cancelling everything and now we're back on track.

Thanks again.
Judi

Happy vacation, Judi! VA spot sounds lovely, and I'm very impressed with how quickly you turned this around!
