Costco - can't beat the price and the cakes are great. Try the carrot cake for a change of pace.

Costco is awesome for a good cake to feed a crowd. If you are looking for a smaller cake that is incredibly delicious, try FOOOD (Food Of Our Own Design) on Springfield Ave. I think they advertise on MOL so you can check out their website.

You'd be happy with either of the above suggestions, but if you're looking for something a little more upscale in fillings & flavours, I recommend Cait & Abby. I've used them many times and have never been disappointed.

thanks. Yes, I did want something upscale but did not want to make a trip to NY to Payards / Balthazar, etc.

Is Cait & Abby in Millburn or SOrange or both?

Back in those days before we moved here, we loved Ganache in Hoboken for buying cakes for occasions (I believe the owner used to be a pastry chef at Le Bernardin and Rainbow Room)

Cait & Abby has a store in both places. Love they're chocolate, chocolate, chocolate cakes!

Call Judy at 973.763.6623...custom cakes that melt in your mouth. Ask about her strawberry mousse cake with a chocolate ganache. I believe some MOL'ers have used her.

I spent a lot of money on a chocolate cake from Cait and Abbys and was disappointed. the next week we had a block party and someone brought a costco chocolate cake which weighed 14 lbs, was 14.99 and tasted unbelievable!!!!! sometimes bakery stuff is just too dry or tasteless. costco white cakes are also great. downside is that you can't go beyond the 5 designs they have standard.

I also find Cait & Abby's baked goods (pastries, cookies & cakes) overpriced and not that great. Costco has absolutely delicious baked goods at very good prices.

Costco's "All American Chocolate Cake" is simply incredible. It doesn't have any writing on it -- I think if you wanted that you'd have to do it yourself. But it's a massive mountain of chocolate decadence.

I think this is the $15 one you're talking about. It would definitely feed many people.

Cait and Abby's - they made a great cake for my son's 1st birthday. I even gave them a design to copy onto it to fit his theme.

For my kids' bday parties, I've been known to purchase a plain sheet cake at Costco--choosing the icing and filling myself--but requesting NO DECORATION--then I just decorate it myself.

You have to order it in advance, though.

Tastes good, inexpensive, and I get to make it look anyway I like.

And it is a local business...

Although I once had a mocha cake from Cait and Abby's that was awesome, I recently ordered a carrot cake from them with buttercream frosting that was a real disappointment. It was very expensive as well. (Maybe their cakes with whipped cream are better, maybe the mocha cake was a whipped cream cake.)Makes me sad, I'd rather support a local business, too.

A friend of mine brought back sweets from Cait and Abby. Even though they looked wonderful, they were just too heavy and sweet. Judy's stuff is light and each one stands on it's own.

Does Judy work out of her home? An acquaintance of mine used to make amazing cakes (very Sylvia Weinstock-ish)- in fact, she made my oldest's wedding cake, but alas, she no longer bakes for public consumption.

Food of Our Own Design on Springfield Ave. in Mplwd. makes an AMAZING chocolate mousse cake. People still rave about the one I served at a party almost 2 years ago!

If you are willing to make a drive to Hoboken and spend a little money, I would recommend Carlo's Bakery on Washington Street in Hoboken.

I recently had a birthday cake from there. It was nothing short of exquisite, both in taste and in appearance. The particular design and size I chose were quite expensive, but it was a significant event for me, and wholly worth it, I thought. Exquisite.

We also had the mousse cake from Food of Our Own Design. Melt-in-your-mouth delicious and again, from a local business. The folks there when we went in were friendly and patient, too. They have a number of other cakes if that one doesn't float your boat.

No, Costco will write on a cake for you - but I'm not sure how much advance notice they need - just call and ask. They're cheap and realllly good - def a good choice for an office. All the bakeries around here have gone missing -- Peter's, Suburban, etc.

Kings in SHort Hills also make delicious personalised cakes. I've also had cakes by Cake Lady and Costco. If Costco is $14 thats got to be a winner - you'd never know the difference.
