I'm not sure what kind of places you like to stay in, and I can't speak from experience, because we haven't stayed at this place yet, but we're going there later in the year and booked this place: http://www.chancellorhotel.com/ And the writeup on Tripadvisor: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60713-d115644-Reviews-Chancellor_Hotel_ on_Union_Square-San_Francisco_California.html Disclaimer: I've never been to San Francisco, so for all I know, this place could be a dive, but it seems to get favorable reviews from people who stayed there, and trip advisor forums are usually pretty reliable. Good Luck! |

We were here n January, in July I believe Fisherman's Wharf is more crowded. Anyway -- great hotel, reasonable price. http://www.argonauthotel.com/ |

We like the Seal Rock Inn- quaint sort of 1950ish vintage hotel- the other side of SanFran-away from the Wharf(which will be packed) overlooking the SealRocks and Sutro bath ruins. Very reasonable INMO...oh and the last time we were there- no seals-- they have all moved to the Marina. San Franscisco is gorgeous and can be chilly in July (!)

We stayed at the Chancellor about five years ago. The location is great and the hotel was good value for the money. If I am thinking of the right hotel (we tend to try different ones in SF depending on who has the best deal), it had a great bar--a huge, old fashioned room with high ceilings. The hotel market in SF is pretty competitive and there are quite a few good, smaller hotels that are centrally located and quite reasonable. When I've traveled there on business I've stayed in the more expensive hotels--all of which lived up to their lofty prices. We've never stayed near the Wharf--while we usually visit the Wharf area at least once, it can be a bit over the top in terms of tourist crowds and souvenier shops. |
