I had posted this on Please Help, but just realized it should have been posted under Travel. Mr. Anna and I are looking for some ideas for a vacation spot for about 8 days, maybe more, for just the two of us, in August. Here are our parameters (truthfully, they are all my rules; the Mr. has no parameters and would go anywhere): - Nowhere that is too hot -- that probably eliminates the south / southwest - No cruises - Someplace relaxing and beautiful but also interesting, with stuff to do It's a big country -- we need a jump start on ideas. I'd appreciate any you may have. Thanks! |

We've gone up to Maine/Nova Scotia and loved it, but if you are driving, 8 days may not be enough time. The Acadia National Park area (Bar Harbor) is beautiful, cool, nice easy hiking, a fjord (Soames Sound), interesting stores and restaurants. It is, however, very crowded in the summer. Montreal is nice, has a "foreign" feel to it, but is easy to get to. I always enjoy it there. Quebec is a bit further, but you could probably do it, too, in your time frame. The Adirondacks of New York are fun - lots of places to stay near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid - you could combine it with a side trip to Ausable Chasm for some easy whitewater rafting, or a trip to Fort Ticonderoga on the way back home - if either of you enjoys Revolutionary War history, you'd love this. Coming back down the NYThruway, you could stop at Howe's Cavern or the Iroquois Museum, both interesting. The scenery is beautiful up there, weather is cool, and there is lots to do. We once took a trip to West Virginia, around Seneca Rock and Blackwater Canyon. I had loved it, but I think some logging is now allowed, so the area may not be as lovely as it was. Easy hiking, some caves to visit, beautifully rugged mountain scenery. On the way home we stopped at Gettysburg, PA - again, we like history and couldn't not stop there. Hope you find a place you like! |

Prince Edward Island is the best. Charlottetown is beautiful, Summerside a quaint old port town, Brackley Point and Dalvey-by-the-Sea on the north shore. Cavendish, Murray River, Malpeque Bay and Brudenell all breathtaking. Great family adventures and a seafood paradise. |

If its just you and the hubby, I don't have too many recommendations that involve destinations specializing in couples stuff (i.e., don't have too many kids around; my experience in that regard is limited to tropical islands/Europe (since those are the only places the missus and I went before kids); if you can deal with having some lovely families in the vicinity and are OK with a mountainhouse/resort, I would recommend Mohonk Mountain House (then again, I always recommend Mohonk); www.mohonk.com. Wherever you go, enjoy and God bless. Cheers!! |

Anna--I'm with you in wanting to avoid the heat / humidity and cruises. A couple of recommendations: Acadia - although we went earlier in the year so I can't say what the weather will be like in August Nova Scotia - we went in September I think and we didn't see a soul on the trails Quebec City and points north - easy flight into QC and then rent a car to explore Canadian Rockies (we leave in less than 2 weeks) San Francisco - might still be cool and foggy in August but you could head north to Napa. September it starts getting better although it's always cool in SF. Can you tell I like Canada?
