Caribbean Cuisine got a nice write up in the Times the other day. You can read it here.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/23/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/25njqbite.html

I wonder if I'm going to have to start calling ahead to get a seat.
Congrats Vidia and Mario.

OK - confession time. I've read all the raves about this place and never said anything, but I went a couple times and didn't care for it. I kept my mouth shut about how I didn't see it as a nice place for a F2F. I didn't want to be mean just for the sake of being mean.

Turns out that I have never been to this restaurant. I was confusing it with some other place. I'm glad that the Times had the address. I guess I'll have to try it. And make a better point about learning the real names of the places that I eat.

Imagine if you decided to give the place another try for the F2F and waited around for everyone to show up.
Definitely give them a try. Let Vidia know that you're a newbie, and she'll explain menu items to you. She's very willing to give you tastings of items to help you decide. The thing I like so much about the pl.

Love it! Will have it for dinner tomorrow night. Chicken on the bone with the peas in the rice. Really nice!

Can someone pull a Rheingold and paste the entire article in this thread? I don't have a name and password and am too lazy to bugmenot it. But I would love to read the article. TIA.

Greeney: which place were you going to? You know that I'm very vocal about CC. I just love the place. Reasonably priced ethnic cuisine, that's actually local, with high quality ingredients. That's a WINNING combination. As for a good place for a F2F...well...? The place isn't pretty or anything. But it is spacious, the owners are SUPER nice and the food rocks. It's BYO with a decent liquor store 1 block away. Maybe if it was the right people. Let us know what you think when you finally make it there.

Sea Moss Rules

By TAMMY LA GORCE
Published: June 23, 2006

Don't be fooled by the rather bland name Caribbean Cuisine. This 10-year-old spot in South Orange specializing in Trinidadian fare — typically a blend of Spanish, Indian, Chinese and Creole elements — has more character than a carnival stilt walker, and the flavors to back it up.

Though many regulars order takeout, there are nine tables. Curried chicken (the friendly woman behind the counter will ask how hot you want it) arrives wrapped in warm, soft roti bread ($8). A mound of expertly seasoned okra rice with plump shrimp ($10.95), a lunch special, comes with fried plantains or cabbage salad.

Tempting desserts include cassava pone (root vegetable pudding) and coconut roll ($2 each). Drinks are enticing, too. Sea moss, a dairy beverage made from seaweed ($1.50), is all creamy freshness, and carrot punch ($1.50) has a lingering sweetness.

Caribbean Cuisine, 74 First Street, South Orange; (973) 313-2877.

Alley - I don't want to post the name of the "wrong place" because there is no reason to say anything negative about a local business. But, it defintitely wasn't CC, which we will certainly try.

10-year-old spot? Were they someplace else before they moved into the old Sinclaire's space? I've only been in town 10 years and I remember the fish restaurant being there for at least a year or two.

ONLY 10 years? I've been here 3 years, you've been here ALOT longer than me.

Thank you Joe for the text. All very accurate, I would say. I think the place deserves a longer write up, but at least everything they said was positive. Regardless, there is NO WAY IN HELL I'm trying a sea moss drink. Not going to happen.

They've been in business for 10 years at the East Orange location. They opened the South Orange location more recently. The fact is they make their money in East Orange where there's a large Caribbean population who miss the flavors of home. They've been struggling to turn a profit in South Orange. So, sad as it is to ponder, they may not be around these parts much longer.

Got take-out last night around 7 PM and there were 2 tables of people in the dining room and 3 others getting take-out besides us. Not sure if that is typical but hopefully they get a steady stream of take-out orders to keep them in business. I love this place and go probably every few weeks. We don't eat out all that much so they get a fair share of our eat out dollars. They are a great value, very nice people and have great food. Hopefully the write up in the NYT will make more people aware and give them a try.
