The outer banks covers a rather large area - where specifically are you going? We usually go to Duck, but waited too long to book a house - so we 18 adults and 9 children will be staying in the Whalehead section of Corolla.

Nags Head is awesome...Fantastic Fishing (offshore, if you like that) nice beaches, cool dunes to play on......Awful Arthurs is fantastic....you'll love it. Look for beach shacks that serve "Dolphin Boats" and Milkshakes...Dolphin Boat is fried Mahi-Mahi on a plate of fries...but super fresh, same day catch in some instances.

Two warnings: 1- it can get very hot and humid in the summer...be prepared....2- DONOT SPEED or DUI....I once recieved 3 tickets (speeding, not DUI) leaving town on a Sunday morning. My wife can witness this feat.

If you enjoy micro-brewed beer & Bavarian food, take a ride south and cross the Causeway. Head toward Manteo & The Weeping Radish. THE best beer we've ever tasted - loved the amber.

We're going to the outer banks at the end of july, have done that for several years. I'm guessing you've planned your route, but I hope it includes taking 13 south through the DelMarVa Peninsula, and across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel into Norfolk, VA.
The bridge is very cool, It's a 12.00 toll, but it's 20 miles long and spans the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay at the Atlantic. The bridge disappears into a tunnel, twice, along its span. Immediately after the 2nd tunnel (IMMEDIATELY) there's a right hand turn into a restaurant/pier in the middle of the ocean. Saw a school of stingrays there once, dolphin, other very cool ocean life.

I don't recommend the restaurant there though.. great place for a bathroom break or to buy some drinks, but there are far better restaurants in Norfolk or further south.

The Wright Brothers Museum is kinda cool, I think you can hang glide near there if you are interested. It's in Kitty Hawk, just north of Nags Head.

We stay a little further north, in Duck usually, but this year in Corolla.

And, as SoOrLady suggested, if you like beer, drive across the causeway into Manteo, and turn right for The Weeping Radish. Good food, very good brewery!

Related Question:
We're going to the Outer Banks with our 18 month old. We've been on a couple of trips there in the past, but that was before we had the baby.
Are there any activities there that are age appropriate? We can only take so much "relaxing" on the beach. We'd like to venture out on a daytrip or two with him
Thanks!

The aquarium is great for little kids. It's on Roanoke Island, just north of Manteo, which, by the way, is lovely. We brought our kids there when they were little and they loved it.

Hey Smarty,
Can't believe it - got pulled over in VA - the limit was 55 - I'm used to 65, obviously - my brother got a ticket in Maryland. Ride home is going to be a slooooow one, as the speed limit changes constantly!!! Chesapeake bay bridge/tunnel WAS fantastic. Daughter loved it.

I ordered a crab cage- figured that would be a fun activity for my son & nieces. When it arrived, my husband asked if we need a license to go crabbing in the Outer Banks.

Anyone know?

You could just stop in any bait & tackle shop, get some bait for the crabs, and ask there. I'm pretty sure you don't need any kind of license for crabs. No license is required for salt water fishing either, but there are size & quantity limits for several species.

Bait shops can tell you all the regulations.

Great place and we have been going for about 20 years.
Nags head is ok but the really nice area is North. DUCK and above. Quiet, laid back and very pleasant. Nice bicycle lane for miles and some shopping just enough for me. Have a great time.

Duck is very laid back - I love it! Rent a bike, rent some movies, read a book, look out over the ocean..... go swimming - what a blast!

We enjoyed Duck and loved being able to rent a "dog-friendly" house, but I have to say that I didn't feel like I got very far from NJ. There were so many Jersey plates down there and I actually ran into people I know who live in Madison. I NEVER run into them in NJ but we ended up at the same jet ski rental down there. It was rather amusing.

Yes, I agree - if you want true Southern Flavor you need to go further south. Before we started vacationing in Duck, we used to go to "the Crystal Coast" - Atlantic Beach, Pine knoll Shores, etc. the Beach actually runs east/west down there - and it's very southern - sweet iced tea, sweet cole slaw, complementary hush puppys on the table at every meal. When six of us went in to purchase 4 bags of grocerys the bag boy insited on carrying our purchases to the car and would not accept a tip because it was "his pleasure" to help us. You don't really find that in the northern part of NC beaches.

Duck and Corolla are kind of like going to LBI - only the houses are much bigger and most of them have private pools. Since we're a large group (19 adults & 9 kids) we head to the area with larger homes.
