Anyone have any suggestions/comments on a reputable company from which to purchase travel health Insurance? Any companies to avoid? Any caveats? Is there an industry organization/accreditation I should look for ? I pulled a quote from hthinsurance.com for about $80 for a 6 week one trip, for a $0 deductible ; $1.000,000 coverage. Does this price seem too good to be true? I do have some health issues, nothing that prevents travel (hinders it a bit, and makes it necessary to plans things) but I figure it could be a good investment. |

spw, what specific coverages and limits are you looking for? Strictly medical (usually offered as accident and/or sickness medical), or are you also looking for medical transportation (usually referred to as Emergency Evacuation)? Depending on where you're going, that's something you really want to have in your back pocket, so to speak. Most travel insurance providers are underwritten by major carriers, but it's certainly worth asking what paper is behind your coverage. There is a (fairly new) industry association here and most of the major players are members. If I can tell you anything else, feel free to PL me. |

I spent a month in the Dominican Republic doing missionary work. I was riding up into the mountains on the back of a motorcycle with no helmet. I took great comfort in the fact that I had Travel Insurance, but it wasn't travel health insurance. In an emergency, I would get emergency transportation back to the U.S. It was very affordable, based on the price of the airline tickets and lenght of stay. No questions about my health. This may be all you really need for peace of mind. Maybe not, I don't know you medical situation. The issue in the Dominican Republic wasn't payment for health care, it was that local health care was crummy and I wanted to come home for anything serious. It might be different from what you need. Thanks! I'm not worried about the cost of the trip; I'm worried about if I get sick or injured while I am away. I've contacted my primary insurance and they claim I would be reimbursed for medical expenses incurred while overseas. However, I've read a few Consumer reports articles, and used the website they suggest for comparison shopping: www.insuremytrip.com . The way I read the info, pre-existing conditions are covered as long as the policy is bought within a specific time frame prior to departure. Once I have my travel dates, I will be purchasing the insurance. The policy also includes trip insurance, and well as insurance for fees incurred for lost passports, etc.

http://www.intsos.com/ I get annual coverage with this company (SOS), and like it. Only used it once........needed to see a doctor in South Africa, and was referred to someone quickly and easily, had excellent service, no problems at all.
