Anyone know if it is considered appropriate (required? discouraged?) to tip the person who provides and/or pushes a wheelchair for a disabled person in an airport? And, if so, how much? I think we've finally convinced my mother to accept this kind of help on a trip later this week and then we began to wonder about tipping.

Speaking from complete ignorance, I would say tip. Figuring that I gave curbside checkin people $x per bag, and the wheelchair attendant is moving Mom, not a bag, and probably for a longer distance/time.

And congrats on convincing your mom to broaden her horizons by accepting this help!!

In Australia tipping wouldn't be acceptable, but then we don't tip generally as a society, and most of these attendants are volunteers anyway.

However a really nice thank you, out loud and in front of their supervisors, goes very far! Another idea, regardless of whether or not you tip, is to write a letter of thanks to whomever (corporation/airport etc) provided the service, naming the attendant. Goes on their record - you know they get named really quickly for poor service but people forget to name for good service.

Unfortunately, I won't be there with them ... although she and my father will have a couple of other (also somewhat elderly) traveling companions, so I'm not sure that a followup letter will be real feasible. I will be seeing them at the other end of their flight, although not in the airport, as we are all traveling to the same destination at various times for a family reunion.

Could ask a travel agent about it?

Airlines provide the attendants as a courtesy service. That said, I believe it would be considered absolutely appropriate to tip, and that it would be gratefully accepted. I'd suggest $5. It's generally a long walk from arrival gate (or plane door) to baggage claim!
