Yawn..... Every post he makes is to promote his business..... All we need now is Elaine Harris to call us all racists for not "supporting" the mastermind chef enough!

Gracious John!!!

I suspect at this point it's because he's living his business trying to get it off the ground. There's plenty else to read on the board if something doesn't suit your fancy.

And what does race have to do with anything here? Jeeesh!!!

There's something called "paid advertising"

OK, good point.
But I'm still uncomfortable with the comment on race.

Unnecessary.

"What I don't get is this: Where is the compassion in this community? We all know the story behind the story. Chef Jesse is a self-made man. He had no help and no money and no mentors, yet managed to pull himself up from a very unpromising childhood to create a restaurant on smoke and mirrors and of course, his exceptional talent as a master chef not to mention his amazingly optimistic personality.

One would think that a community like this, one that talks the talk, would have supported him unconditionally until such time as his finances would have allowed him to either relocate or redecorate. I am personally very surprised about this lackluster support from the community at large".

Hey Scully try reading up on the issue first! If Elaine Harris doesn't call out the Maplewood/South Orange community here than I don't know what she is doing. I do know that this guy only posts to promote his business. I own a business in Maplewood, you will never know which one.... because I'm not a self promoter, or worse an an appologist for my failed venture!!!!

I see your point but I still don't see why race had to be brought in. Just my opinion but there it is. I don't see race mentioned in what you quoted (gotten from another thread?)

How am I not well read? I was replying to what I was seeing on THIS thread. No way did I imply that I had read the entire board!!!

And what would be wrong in mentioning your business? I'm a BIG fan of buying local (am weaning myself from big-box-ism) and see nothing wrong with local businesses making themselves known. It sorta personalizes things, and it's nice to see who's involved with the community (MOL being part of the community for me).

Oh well, I'm not trying to 'out' you or anything. Am just uncomfortable with the race angle.

It is all good here. I certainly didn't mean to imply you were not well read or anything like that. My specific complaint can be found here "One would think that a community like this, one that talks the talk, would have supported him unconditionally" This and the whole story can be found in the Heart N soul thread. I find this quote to imply some kind of discrimination on our part. We talk the talk but we don't walk the walk and support Jesse's business..... Really what happened is he FAILED! He only posts when he needs our help ie. (come to my ......) So bearing that in mind I am not inclined to help him. Much love to you , even if you are hyper-senitive about race (remember anglo's have rights too) and my business is thrivin'.....

It's cool. I don't consider myself 'hyper-sensitive' about race but to each their own. (You want hyper-sensitive? Let's talk out-sourcing... .)

I guess I just don't see race in that quote (maybe I'm more thick headed than sensitive?). I know Anglo's have rights, I've lived a very blessed life. (Actually I'm Irish/German. Some Anglo-Saxon in there. Though a DNA test put me at more eastern European...) Whatever! we all got rights, responsibilities, and a damn fine chance at good life here, the current state of the world aside.

Thanks for the good wishes and I'm glad your business is doing well. Healthy business = healthy community. Be Well!

Scully you nailed it. Jesse it was a pleasure to enter your resturant. The food was wonderful. The ribs were to die for. Your cornbread is a taste of heaven. If you have learned from the experience it's a good thing. In time when you decide to open a business again I will be on line to support you again! Be well Jesse please keep in touch with the MOL community you have a lot of fans out here. Thank you for many relaxing evenings in your domain.

John:

Elaine could have easily been referring to the African-American community in her diatribe (or those of us on MOL who talk about supporting local businesses, any other such community). The term and how she used it was pretty inexact, and I do not know her or the context she was placing it in. Just trying to point out that it was not necessarily meant to be aimed at S/MO as a whole.

As to supporting Jesse, yes, I am one of his boosters because I love his food, and also the passion with which he produced it. He was woefully undercapitalized and could not cover the slow times; for some reason his location did not work (it was not that bad--works for Haru from what I see); he had no money for advertising and promotion; he made some business decisions based on these problems that ultimately compounded them. And he faced a problem of category confusion--his food is not traditional Southern, so people looking for that often did not know how to take it. Yet, his food is also not classic fine dining (although the preparation and ingredients rival the best restaurants around), and so some balked at the prices he had to charge for eating ribs and cornbread. Tough business model to make work--but great food, some of the best I have ever had.

Still, even though H&S failed, I give him credit for not giving up on his passion. He continues to scramble to find a way to feed his family while feeding other people, and what he feeds us with is pretty darned good stuff. I also have misgivings about using MOL as a free advertising base, since Jamie and Dave also deserve to make a living. But I see a guy trying to find some way, any way, to continue to make it work. I would hope that as his catering and special events stuff get going, he will start taking out paid ads on MOL. Or if he winds up as an executive chef at a restaurant around here, he will let us know so we can patronize that restaurant (and they will take out an ad on MOL).

In the meantime, if I need some catering with ribs and cornbread and salmon and yams, I know who I am going to call.

Regards,

Mark
