We're going for 4 days this week with our two kids (4 & 6) and I was wondering what else we could do besides go to the beach. Any suggestions? Thanks.

eat ice cream every day, miniature golf, paint your own pottery, go about one hour off island to Storybookland (http://www.storybookland.com/), rent 2 double kayaks, go crabbing, take a sunset boat cruise, check out what is going on at the Loveladies art center, lighthouse, historical center in Barenagat Light (great garden), rent bikes...can you tell I love it there???

The lighthouse (known as Old Barney) is a favorite with my kid as it was with us when we were kids. There's a short nature trail there, as well as a wall and walkway that has been built out by the water. It's a busy inlet so if your kids are into boats, it's fun to just watch them from one of the benches.

On the other end of the island, in Holgate, sometimes there are people from Alliance for a Living Ocean there to talk about the birds that nest and hang out in the bird sanctuary down there. Haven't been down there yet this year, but last year we loved talking to the young woman.

If you like to shop and get a moment away from your kids, there are some nice antique shops around. My favorites are the Sea Wife in Barnegat and some other place (can't remember the name) in Surf City. Go in any and they'll have a listing of the others.

We love storybook land as mentioned before. It's a bit of a ride, but worth it for that age group.

With kids the same age, here are our favorites in the Beach Haven area:
* Surflight Kids Theater: http://www.surflight.org/WhatsChildrens.htm

* Followed by Ice Cream at the Showplace Ice Cream Parlor: http://www.surflight.org/showplac.htm

* A night or two at Fantasy Island Amusement Park: http://www.fantasyislandpark.com/

* Thundering Surf Waterpark: http://www.thunderingsurfwaterpark.com/waterpark.htm

* An evening Bay cruise on the Black Whale (my kids love this!!): http://blackwhalecruises.com/page/15fgm/Cruises.html

* Breakfast at Uncle Will's Pancake House: http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=10874683

Rent bikes and explore the island--it's a wonderful family place.

All of these are in Beach Haven:

Noticed that Uncle Will's was mentioned here. A well-kept secret is that they have a special called the 2-2-2. It's between 7-8 am only and it's $2.22 for 2 eggs, 2 (of the best ever) pancakes and 2 pieces of bacon or sausage. I'm really cheap and I tell my crowd that we can only go to Uncle Will's for the $2.22 meaning that they have to get up before 8:00am. They do it and it's like an early morning adventure. (I also make everyone get tea or water to drink!) Once the special is over (I think) the prices are quite high for breakfast. You have to mention the 2-2-2 because they will not.

Another one of our favorites (And, yes, sometimes I only go there if they all say they will order it) is the Cream of Brocoli Soup from Barry's Do Me a Flavor on Center St. on the bay side across the Blvd. The soup is excellent, filling and comes with fresh, hot garlic knots - again, for under $3. Barry's always has the Cream of Brocoli and some other Soup of the Day.

There's also the "Lady Baltimore Cake" at the Holiday Snack Bar which is also on the bay side across the Blvd. on Centre St. (a bit farther toward the bay - and I hope it's still there - every year there's a rumor that it's closing.) The snack bar is a throw-back to another time. There's an actual bar that's somewhat circular and takes up the entire room (which is the entire snack bar). They also have hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. - but it's the cake that's really special. Layers of homemade devils' food cake with tons of something like "Fluffernutter" in between & on top. Several years ago we had a "ladies" night which included facials, foot massages, eye cucumbers, great music and - Lady Baltimore Cake!

If you're specifically in the Beach Haven area and in walking distance to the Chicken or the Egg - it's always fun to let the groovy teens go late at night (or my husband has taken our then 10 year old at midnight and she thought it was the greatest outing ever). It's open 24/7 and there's people eating there all the time. In the wee hours the bar crowd shows up and it can be quite entertaining. But the teens and under get a real kick out of being at a "hot spot" late at night.

Thank you Helen!

I've been going to LBI my entire life and while I know about each establishment you mention, I had no idea about the insider tips! I will love passing along your tidbits to my dad who thinks he is mayor of Long Beach Township.....
