We will be attending a family reunion in Lake Tahoe for a week in early August. Would anyone have suggestions of activities other than gambling that they've enjoyed? We'll be in King's Beach (California) with our almost-seven year olds. We're particularly interested in hiking, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and restaurant suggestions. Thanks! |

I haven't been to Tahoe since my college days. We usually went after finals in December so I can't give you any suggestions. I did go one summer and I remember the hiking was especially good. Check out the link below for some trail info. http://www.tahoesbest.com/Hiking/ |

We've gone rafting on the Truckee River - fun for all ages, not too intense. Also you can go to Squaw Valley and take a tram up the mountain. Up top there is an incredible view as well as a pool and restaurant. Great way to spend the day. The beach at Crystal Bay is great, but get there early because the parking lot fills up. Emerald Bay has a great view. Log Cabin Restaurant (in King's Beach) has GREAT breakfasts. Enjoy |

We always went to Emerald Beach which I recall was a good "beach" location on Lake Tahoe. Tahoe will always be one of my favorite places in the world. We also hiked to "Echo Lake" often, pretty easy if I recall, and they were famous for their lemonade once you got there. This said, we were always near SOuth Lake Tahoe, and don't know where you will be. Also, this was what I did as a kid 20-30 years ago, so I'm sure things have changed. Still, say the word "Tahoe" and I simply melt down with the memories. |

The Desolation Wilderness area, on the west side of Lake Tahoe, is absolutely spellbinding. Fantastic hiking. |

Yes, I did an overnight hike with a group of teenagers to "Aloha Lake" in Desolation Wilderness which was incredible. Again, this was 20+ years ago and I remember it clearly. |

We took the gondola up to the top of the ski mountain and swam in the (heated) outdoor pool there. Kids love it. |

Thanks, everyone, for these terrific suggestions. I'm finally getting excited. We're also visiting (with our elves) San Francisco, for one week before Tahoe. I think I'll take them up to Marin to see the Redwoods ... |
