Reservoir! We almost went tonight but the rain kept us in.
Share a nice Tony salad (we get the meat on the side) or fried calamari and a yummy pie. You might want to order two though...I can eat three slices! It's sooo good.

Um.. pretty much ANY good pizza place is gonna be busy on a Friday night.. that's just the nature of things.

The Reservoir is our favorite pizza, the Tony salad is wonderful, and a salad for one will very easily serve two or more.

Bunny's is great too, with a thinner crust than Reservoir. Lots of MOL'ers post from Bunny's wi-fi, so bring a laptop and tell us how you liked it.

:-)

Star Tavern in Orange is, in my opinion, far-and-away the best pizza I've had in the area and worth the 20-25 minute drive from SOM. I find the pizza in town - Bunny's, Resevoir, Village Trattoria, etc. - to be fairly unremarkable and ordinary. Do yourself a favor and make the drive to Orange, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Though Star Tavern got us through our sad days straight out of Brooklyn, and still find it exceptional, lately we really prefer Joe's pizzeria on Springfield Avenue - across from Nunzio's - we like to eat there, but it's not great with the atmosphere...

Has anyone ever gone to Spirito's in Elizabeth - it's near Newark airport - that's good stuff - and worth a trip.

I have been to Spirito's It does have great food, although they do not give you butter for your bread. My friend told me that before we went there and I though he was kidding with me, but he was not. There was some reasoning behind this, but I forgot what it was. The food really was very good there and they give you a lot.

yeah, all my family from Elizabeth used to come prepared with butter in ziplocks. No joke. It's great food, though.

The probably don't give you butter because that's how they do it in the old country. Ask for olive oil and you'll get it though.

I second Joe's on Springfield Avenue. The atmosphere is so unremarkable that i drove by 15-20X before realizing that was what everyone told me about. The pizza is highly addictive and they use a secret ingredient that enables the average easter to accomodate 50% more than they are usually eating.

Yeah, Joe's delivers -- don't know about that, because we actually REALLY enjoy eating there and getting it right out of the oven. Let us know your experience with delivery!

We agree with Reservoir for best pizza around. That and a Tony Salad are the perfect combo!

Milosdad:

how many times have you had pizza at the reservoir? I believe it is the best around. Please give it another try. I have not had star tavern pizza but I have heard nothing but good things.

We're going to try Joe's sometime. Usually we do Bunny's on friday night but last Friday we wanted to "lay low" -- ended up getting a pizza from Arturo's and bringing it home. I want to try Star Tavern, I've heard they have video games, is that true? How about cheap pitchers? Is it clean? No need to sparkle, as long as their are no flys.

Oots,

I am relatively new to the area - since January '06 - and have been to Resevoir a couple of times, it's not bad, I just wouldn't go out of my way to go there. I'm anxious to try Joe's based on the strong word of mouth on this thread. I admit to being a pizza snob having been spoiled by living in Brooklyn and eating at such legendary pizza joints as Totonno's in Coney Island and Patsy Grimaldi's by the Brooklyn Bridge. I was really pleased with the pizza at Star Tavern and thought it was head and shoulders above Bunny's, Resevoir and Village Trattoria

Another vote for the Star Tavern! After moving from Brooklyn, it took us a while to try a bunch of different places, until we found out about the Star Tavern.

Word of advice - definitely eat the pizza there, rather than getting take-out. The pizza, straight out of the oven, is heaven! One of my neighbors was telling me about a friend of his who always tries to get the first booth next to the kitchen - allegedly it makes a difference :-)

I don't know if they serve pitchers, but they have some good bear on tap. Price is pretty reasonable as well.

Another suggestion: We love Quincy's on Valley Road in West Orange. Besides pizza, they also have great burgers, sandwiches, and some daily specials.

I should point out that the strong word of mouth about Joe's in this thread is really only two people saying they like it. But still... go for it. I personally think Bunny's blows both Joe's and Star Tavern away within the "bar pie" category. But it's a personal choice.

If you do go to Joe's, i think they have a special on Mondays that's two pizzas for a lower price. Although that price seems to have gone up by a buck or two every few months for the past 3 years, so it may not be such a bargain anymore.

gertie- Food poisoning does not make a restaurant bad. You can get food poisoning in your own home if something comes from a distributor that is tainted. Star Tavern has been there for over 40 years so I highly suspect that your friend's case was a random case....
Star Tavern is an experience in itself and the bar pies are good.

papayagirl, I agree re bar pies, which is all Star Tavern's regular pizza is. I finally tried it and while it was quite good, we found the service slow and Bunny's pizza is as good if not better. Certainly closer and I know people there too!

The only thing I liked about Joe's was the crowd inside. Pizza didn't do it for me. We've had Star Tavern and didn't love it either. For you former Hobokenites - Star has sort of a Leo's Grandevous ambiance minus the Sinatra stuff.
