I hate driving 95 and the GSP. Has anyone driven to DC along a scenic route? I always drive the Taconic, the Merritt, etc. going north. Are there roads like these from NJ driving south without going too far out of the way? Thanks. |

How far do you want to avoid 95 and how long are you willing to prolong the trip? If it's 95/GSP in NJ that you want to avoid, easy. Take 78W to 287/202/206 South. Stay on 202 South all the way past Doylestown to 309. 309 hooks back up with 95 south of Philly. It's sure scenic. There are a few varitions on that that take you thru Buck's County. You can also side trip to New Hope/Lambertville. |

Thank you, Greenetree. Honestly, I don't even know how long I am willing to prolong the trip but if I am driving by something pretty to look at and I can stop periodically and let the dogs out on grass without cars and trucks speeding by I will be happy. If I get back onto 95 south of Philadelphia, any idea how much time I would be adding to the trip down to the White House (my hotel is a couple blocks from there )? P.S. No time for side trips this time around. |

Depending on what traffic would have been like on GSP/95, you'llprobably add 30-60 minutes, I suppose. You'd fly 78/202 to Flemington (about 45 min), then get sluggish & then faster again, but not like on 78. The meandering thru Bucks is what will cost you time Crossing the river into Philly is about 1h 45m from Maplewood when you take 95. Add perhaps another 30 minutes to get to the other side of Philly, where you'd pick up 95 from the scenic route.

One pretty weird way to go but clearly would be longer is via Cape May, then the ferry to Delaware (good break) and then driving thru DE to DC. Probably quite a bit longer. Toyed with the idea of doing that recently but didn't fit my schedule. |

That's a pretty trip, we've done it. But it's GSP all the way to Cape May. |

In the Delaware Maryland part...301 and then West on 50 is pretty nice (though longer timewise). However, it may be that on Summer weekends it's faster than you think. Certainly the visuals are good. |
