I wouldn't recommend Casa Maya for a group of 10. Four... definitely. |

The Mexican place in Bloomfield (near the train station) would be PERFECT for this. Anyone remember what it's called? Also the food is better than Tinga and Toro Loco. |

I think the Mexican restaurant in Bloomfield is called Seniorita's. I agree that it is better than both Tinga and Toro Loco.

Yes, I give a third vote for Seniorita's. Better food and much better atmosphere. Toro Loco feels too much like a college bar scene, IMO. |

There is also a good Mexican place in New Providence town next to the Chinese place (both names escape me). More authentic Mexican |

SOSully is talking about Jose's Cantina. Food is GREAT, but it is BYO and I wouldn't say the best atmosphere for a girl's night out. Further afield is Jose Tejas on Rt 1 and also on Rt 46. Very good, cheap, fun, and lots of booze. Kids like it too (but take them early). |

I like the Mexican place on Route 10 in East Hanover in the shopping center in front of the Home Depot. I think it is called Don Jose. I can't remember whether or not they have a liquor license, though, as we usually don't imbibe. |

I like the place in East Orange- I think it's El Bandido? Really good guacamole & good margaridas. |

Unfortunately, our dinner was cancelled - I was getting so excited about some Mexican food and margaritas! I'll have to try some of these places soon. |

Just for the record, El Bandido is very close to the corner tip of West Orange, so don't be scared off by the East Orange location. |

El Bandido is in Orange, not East Orange, and is (as Alleygator notes) very close to the West Orange border. Los Tapatios in West Orange is one or two blocks away from El Bandido, also on Main Street. Both are more or less across the street from the Karl's Appliance store there.

We found ourselves as Los Tapatios several weeks ago after going to Harrar with friends and learning they weren't serving some of the dishes the kids would like. Rather than getting back in the cars and dragging 5 kids elsewhere, we hopped into Los Tapatios. My husband and I had been there in the past, and loved the guacamole, but the menu doesn't really offer much for vegetarians. The owner confirmed they don't use lard, their salsa & guacamole was fresh and delicious. It's not California-style, which is my usual preference, but it was much fresher than Toro Loco. They happily accommodated the vegetarians and meat-eaters in our group. |

SAC: Thanks for the clarification. I should have known, since the Orange train station is but a stones throw from there. TS used to work about a block from El Bandido a long while back, so I really should have known. I used to have a co-worker who lived in W. Orange who took the bus into the city, and when I suggested she take the same train as me as a way to avoid her flaky bus stuck in tunnel traffic. She looked surprised, as if she didn't realize there was a train in her town that went direct into the city. When I explained that the Orange Train station was LITERALLY on the corner edge of W. Orange, she was horrified that I would suggest that she enter Orange. You see, she was told by her husband that Orange was a dangerous place. The next day, she told me that she asked her husband about the Orange station as a commuting option, and he felt that it was just too horrible of an area for his sweet, little, delicate wife to be waiting for a train. And it is with that story in mind that I tried to explain that El Bandido is extremely close to W. Orange. |

We've become big fans of El Bandido as well. There's never a wait, they give you lots of little extras like quesadillas when you sit down, they have a bar, the food's really good, and most importantly, it's very kid friendly! We've never been to Los Tapatios, because we just haven't had a need to stray. But once in a while we talk about it (then we go to El Bandido anyway). How does it compare? |

I've never been to El Bandido, but Los Tapatios gives the free quesadilla too. That was one of my girls meals! |

I would like El Bandido more if it wasn't so CAVERNOUS. The place is like, literally underground. But the food was fine from what I remember. |

Are Jose's and Casa Maya related? I used to be a devotee of Jose's (Fabio's) when I lived over that way, and recently went to Casa Maya, and noticed many similarities in the menu...Sorry for the run-on sentence. |

They used to be owned by the same guy, but I'm not sure if that is still true. He opened a third restaurant in Berkeley Heights, but that changed hands pretty quickly, if I remember correctly. Jose's used to be my local Mexican take out. Never spent much time at Casa Maya--the parking was terrible and the wait wasn't worth it at the time. Would just get take out from Jose's instead. |

El Bandido isn't underground. You actually go up a few steps to get in. It's just rather windowless. They also have a second floor, which is better lit, although IMHO not as atmospheric. I kinda like looking at all of the murals on the walls downstairs. And Casa Maya has a whole parking lot behind it. It's covered in gravel, if that's what you mean by terrible. But we've never had a problem parking. |

Notice that I said at the time. They didn't always have that lot. It used to be just a few slots on the side of the road. They were very smart to improve the situation. |

Have to cast my vote for Senoritas! Though menu is not all that extensive, the service and value are great. |

Went to Seniorita's this weekend based on the MOL rec's. It was excellent and a nice space besides. I wish we had a similar space in SO. |
