with only 2 days of leisure in DC, what are the musts? i'm planning on the museum of american history and the american art museum/portrait gallery. thinking about the renwick gallery. has anyone been to the capitol and seen the newly refurbished area housing the declaration of indepence?

what about restaurants? staying at the DC ritz carlton so places within walking distance of there would be good because i will be with a senior citizen. she likes steak.

thanks for any tips !

the best meal we had was lunch at the American Indian Museum Cafeteria...the food is broken into five regions of the Americas. (we also went with two kids so it was pizza and burger places for dinner...but if youre looking for a lunchspot on The Mall, its the way to go.) My in-laws went a few weeks after we did and really loved their ride out to Monticello and Arlington. Our "musts" were more geared towards the kids (Air and Space Museum, for example), but the American Indian Museum is a cool building and an interesting stop in addition to the stops you already plan to make. I liked the Jefferson and FDR Memorials as nice stops with good vantage points of the city that were slightly (a short drive) off the beaten path if its a nice day.

The Constitution and D of I are in the Archieves, not the Capitol. It is fun to see and the Archieves is beautiful now. Long lines usually. I love the Museum of Women in the Arts. The Spy Museum if you're with kids, or if you like a lot of fun. I second the American Indian Museum. My favorite food place is the cafe with the waterfall underneath the East and West Wing. The best way to get to see all the memorials is to buy a ticket for the mini bus line (can't remember the name) that has stops at everything. We leave our car home, take the train, walk or Metro it. Take cabs in hot weather with a senior. The Metro escalators are a bit off-balancing and scarey for some. Have a great time. You can email me if you want more info. We go 6-7 times a year. Love the RC.

go to opentable.com

best restaurants I've been to in DC are cheiba, butterfield 9, mie n yu, and indie blue

def walk around gtown and see al the shops and the waterfront. It really is so pretty. Mie n yu is fairly new and in Gtown you could stop there on the way. very unique and pretty decor. Go to their website. Their fish/ steak is very good! Fusion themed with thai, morroco, italian, and not sure of what else. You sit on plush couches and they have a bird cage you can request to sit in. Just went on a date last weekend there and HIGHLY reccomend it. It's really something to see!

Nice Vietnamese place one block South of Wisconsin and M Street
in Georgetown. "Saigon" I think it is.

Go 2 blocks further and one of the best restaurants in the city, Citronelle,
is on the same side of M Street.

If you're going to be in Georgetown and you're looking for an incredible food experience, go to Citronelle. It's easily the best restaurant in town and one of the best in the country.

I can see thinking it's too expensive or something, but 'yuck'? To each his own, I guess. But it's easily one of the best meals I've ever had.

I don't think it's very expensive at all.
That's not it. Crowd there is not very good. But you are right to each his own.

What did you end up getting there that was so good? Maybe I will try it again....

If Citronelle was located in NY, it would garner 4 stars easily.
The chef, Michel Richard, is an internationally recognized master.
He actually came from the pastry side of the kitchen which makes his
dishes a bit different than your standard high French fare.

I recommend you try his tuna nicoise, the cuttlefish,
and the Colorado lamb.

Yes, one of the best meals I have ever had also.

thanks all for the info...but does anyone know of a good restaurant for steaks within walking distance of the ritz carlton? msg?

also, msg, have you dined in the hotel? remember, i will be accompanied by a senior and we don't like to make a production of going to dinner...hence, hotel dining or within walking distance.
