For my husband's 40th B-Day, I'd like to take him and a couple of his closest friends out to dinner at a nice restaurant anywhere in Essex County. Any suggestions/recommendations are greatly appreciated. bklyngirl |

I'm sure it's your favorite Alley. Not that it matters but Mojave Grill, in Westfield, is in Union County . |

The Manor or Highlawn Pavillion. Both are in West Orange. |

I love taking big groups to the Ironbound section of Newark. The Sangria flows nicely, with great food that won't break the bank. Our favorites are Fornos of Spain, Casa Vasca and Adega Grill. Enjoy! |

Wendy. I've not been here long enough to know that. But it is close by and it is truly MY FAVORITE and where I would go for my Bday celebration. |

I just celebrated my 40th at Table 8 in Montclair. It was very good, and a BYOB, which kept costs down a bit. |

Amanda's in Hoboken or Lorena's in Maplewood. And the food is good at Mojave, but the atmosphere and service aren't so hot and their reservation policy is absurd. I don't think I'll go back given what a pain it was. |

Well now that I've educated you about counties Alley, where in Essex do you suggest? You're right; Westfield is quite close. We actualy belong to the Westfield YMCA, a great full-service Y, which is just as close to us in Maplewood as is the JCC (perhaps a bit further but I like it better for now). Anyway, when we next have something to celebrate I will definitely try Mojave Grill based upon your rec, which I do respect, all kidding aside. |

There's a current thread on this subject (not limited to Essex) at: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=5 In Essex, you might also consider Verjus (Maplewood; great food, great wine list) or Mangia Questia on Bloomfield Ave in Verona (lovely but a bit more casual ambiance, BYO, excellent high class Italian with huge portions). I'd also suggest you consider Rosemary & Sage, www.rosemaryand sage.com, 616-0606 in Riverdale, about 1/2 an hour away off Route 287. There's a 5 course menu for $58 a person that's a fabulous deal for a high end meal. There are a number of special tasting dinners there as well. |

My wife & I really liked the Huntley Taverne in Summit. It's in Union County but very close to MW/SO. http://www.thehuntleytaverne.com/

I've given two birthday parties at Garlic Rose in Madison. They are very easy to work with and it's BYOB. I love Huntley too. |

Huntly Tavern owners just opened Roots Steak House in downtown Summit. Delicious! If you haven't had a great steak or prime rib in some time this is definitely the place to go! |

My first and foremost recommendation for a special ocassion is always Amanda's in Hoboken. It's not Essex, but Hudson County, but only about 20 minutes away with no traffic. Ambiance to spare, delicious, precisely prepared food, a good wine list, and a bar for mixed drinks, of which, if I remember correctly, the usually have specials. They've been around a long time, are very customer service oriented and have consistantly great reviews. Hubby and I went to Highlawn Pavillion for our anniversary this past May and we loved it! Very much on par with Amanda's but with a stunning view of the NYC skyline. Both places will run you $150 for dinner for two including wine. |
