We're going on a cruise from Miami and afterwards will have 21/2 days before our flight back here from Fort Lauderdale. We've never been to the area before but our 17 year old son will be with us....he will obviously like some action - pretty girls to look at(!) jet-skiing, parasailing etc. but he's sadly too young for nightlife. We need somewhere to stay for a couple of nights...any ideas? Would Boca Raton be too posh/stuffy? Is Miami reasonably safe - esp. around the South Beach area? Ideally I don't want him in the same room as us...a passion killer for sure - but if the place is really nice then it might be do-able. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel...preferably with a pool and short walking distance from the beach and hopefully not in the middle of nowhere with nothing but other hotels in the vicinity (eg. Trump Sonesta doesn't appeal, seems isolated to other amenities/attractions). I just remember stories in the English newspapers a few years ago where foreign tourists were being identified by the stickers on the rental cars and were robbed - some were indeed murdered - in the Miami area. I'm confident that it can't be so bad now and I know that the rental car companies no longer have their logos on their cars there, but of course being a tourist I don't know where the dodgy areas are. I know someone must have had a nice time in this part of FL! |

South Beach is the place - your son can feel like he's part of the nightlife (around the pools during the day) and there is certainly a lot of eye candy. Any of the hotels on Collins on the ocean side of the street would be probably be the best location. I've never felt unsafe there. Price is all going to depend on timing. Check out the Loews, National, Delano, Sagamore etc. Sagamore might be a great choice as the rooms are all suites - a seperate bedroom that attaches to the bedroom and closes off from the living room which has a pull out. Prices are high in season but I've gotten some good deals.

Delray Beach is the town just north of Boca. It has plenty of night life, lots of restaurants, lots of pretty girls. I've seen people wind-surfing and hang gliding--I don't remember jet skiing. I've also seen people whizzing around in those ultralight aircraft. There's a tennis center which hosts some really big tournaments, a museum, and a lot of galleries and shops. There's a nice Marriot hotel right across the street from the beach, and about a mile of free, accessible public beach. And it's safe. It's a lot safer than Miami. There is the occasional local inebriate who has to be rolled home and sobered up, but we've been going there for several years now, and we've never felt unsafe there.

I used to live in Boca and Miami. Although, Delray Beach is up and coming, it cannot compare to South Beach. At South Beach, you will have non-stop entertainment day and night. Your son will feel like he is part of the scene just by hanging out on Ocean Avenue. If he skates or boards, he could rent some and go up and down the boardwalk.....nice eye candy! Or he could chill out on the beach (however, be advised that there are frequent topless women sunbathing on the beach....and no, they aren't breastfeeding). And trust me that South Beach is safe, especially around Ocean Avenue. I don't know where to stay there, but if you go, try to stay near Ocean Drive (although near Lincoln Road Mall wouldn't be that bad either). |

Thanks - some great advice here! Mr Big Poppa....how interesting that there are topless sunbathers on the beach as I would have thought that it would be banned in such a popular area. I would imagine though that most of the women are European tourists and not from the USA - I can't see many American girls daring to go topless as it's not the 'done thing' here is it? My son would be horrified if he knew that his mum used to sunbathe topless back in the day on beaches in Greece, Spain, South of France etc. but yesterday he refused to go to the town pool with me until I'd changed out of my bikini and put a swimming costume on ... After all, the English tabloid, Rupert Murdoch's "The Sun" has topless girls on Page Three in each daily edition (there is even a dedicated website for Page 3 LOL!) so it's nothing unusual for anyone from the UK. Yeah - I can imagine my son having a fantastic time at South Beach....as long as his parents are not hovering around too much LOL! |

Boca's fine if you play shuffleboard and don't mind me hustling you on local courts. Plus, the Oracle's otherwise occupied, so you've got that going for you... -s. |

I like to stay at Crescent Suites on South Beach. NO pool, but the ocean is just across the street! Lots of activity for Junior, and very good places to eat up and down Ocean Drive & Collins Ave. |
