Today's article in the NY Times about the search for the perfect lobster roll in Maine got me in the mood for one. I remember going to Nathan's in Oceanside, LI every month with my family when I was a kid and making a beeline straight for the lobster rolls.

Is there anywhere around here to get a good lobster roll? I am not travelling to the Jersey Shore for one .... somewhere local. Maybe Pathmark sells them along side the fried chicken!

At the Maplewood pool -- delicious, and relatively cheap (maybe $7?).

I didn't see the Times piece; did they mention Red's Eats in Wiscasset? The most unbelievable lobster roll ever, just pure sweet fresh-off-the-boat lobster meat (more than one whole lobster's worth) on a soft fresh grilled New England style hot dog bun, with your choice of mayonnaise or drawn butter served on the side. Pure heaven!

St James Gate also has lobster rolls on some nights. I'm not positive, but I think that Freeman's supplies to the lobster salad to them. At any rate, they're a bit more expensive than the pool (maybe $13), but have a fairly generous serving of lobster.

The lobster rolls at St. James Gate are really good - if they're on the menu, they should satisfy your lobster roll craving.

Hi! It's Helen from Freeman's Fish Market. Yes, we have lobster rolls at the pool. We use our homemade lobster salad that we also sell in the store. The cost at the pool is $9.00 which includes the roll, chips and a pickle. In the store, the lobster salad is quite pricey, $32.00/lb., however, when you think about all the lobsters that have to be used to make it, it's really not that bad. Also, a pound makes 4 nice-sized lobster rolls. We use a quarter lb. for each lobster roll at the pool also.
Enjoy!

Red's Eats!!! Is the best...short of that, yup Freeman's at the pool. If you're in NYC, Mary's Fish Camp has a truly fantastic lobster roll

I make my own sometimes. I gave up on finding on off Cape that I liked.

Mary's Fish Camp and Pearl's Oyster Bar in the city are the absolute best - they come with amazing fries.
Closer to home I agree with Freeman's at the pool although for me a true lobster roll has to have that grilled buttery roll.

Helen,

Since I do not belong to the Maplewood pool ... can I get a lobster roll in your store?

Also, from what I could gather from the NYTimes article, the lobster rolls in Maine are made from mostly lobster meat ... by that, I mean that there might not be any "salad" in the lobster roll. There is even a debate as to whether or not to add mayo to the lobster. Is the lobster roll at Freeman's mostly lobster or mostly salad?

Go to any Mickie Dee's in New England in summer and order a McLobster. They are good and inexpensive -- usually around $4.00.

In case you were worried, I haven't found any "sea legs" in the McLobser lobster rolls either.
