Browsing through wikipedia and I discovered this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smarties_%28Ce_De_Candy%29

I never would have realised that your Smarties aren't my Smarties! Mine are coloured brittle sugar-candy-coated chocolate buttons about the size of 1 cent piece (if you still have them!), and the outer shell is a solid colour but a packet contains many different colours. Similar to M&Ms but much nicer chocolate and crisper coating. (sorry if that's a heresy - Aussies tend not to liek the taste of your chocolate much. I will confess to liking those peanut butter cups, though!)

As the article says, what you call Smarties, I'd call Fruit Tingles - hardened sherbet-like tablets in fruity flavours. aours aren't really sour but they're not overly sweet.

Fancy that!

I only know the Smarties you refer to (the M&M-like ones) - love the orange ones!

Are you sure you're not thinking of Jaffas? chocolate spheres, covered in orange-flavoured, oranged-coloured sugar-candy? the ones I'm thinking of don't have any different falvours just colurs, and are flattened buttons. The US smarties in the wikipedia article are like the fruit tingles...

I am going to have to sent you some! None of them have flavours EXCEPT for the orange ones (I always saved them till last)

Funnily enough, last year I had a terrible time getting them here, and was told that it was the red colouring causing problems. Whether that was true or not, after about 6 months, they began to come through again.

Joanne seriously, try them and if they aren't the English ones, and you can't taste the "orange" smarties, let me know and I will happily send some over.

We will then have a virtual/reality taste testing!!!

Nope - talking about Smarties - I used to live in England for a brief time & they were my movie treat of choice...we buy them for the kids whenever we visit.

It might depend on the local maufacturers and where they get their supplies...? anyway, this site says that the orange ones taste different befcause of orange oil: http://www.classaxe.com/smarties/

Now Jaffas are something else entirely wonderful...H'mmm, jaffas....

I grew up in Canada and we have the same Smarties as you Aussies (and the Brits). My daughter can't wait for Grandma to visit as she is always laden with Smartie treats. I never noticed the orange ones having a different flavor but will check next time.

Smarties here are these chalkie little tablets that come in rolls - usually see them at Halloween. Where I grew up they were called Rocket something or other.

One day i was driving down Morris Ave, and i took a turn down a side street in order to try to avoid the upcoming lights at Liberty and Burnett. It turned out to be a dead end, but there was a giant building with a Smarties logo on the side. I always wondered if they made Smarties there.

I never looked it up, because i didn't want to shatter the dream of one day seeing signs for a local Smartie festival.
