We're going in October. 1st time out west. Just us - No kids - they'll be away at college. Besides swiming in the Pacific we have no plans... any tips?

We went to a wedding in San Diego (sans kids - went with them before for Lego Land, Zoo & Sea World)) last fall and stayed in La Jolla...it's a lovely little town. Rent a convertible! Here were some of our favorites: Hotel: http://www.hotelparisi.com/ Brunch (make reservations: http://www.brocktonvilla.com/ Fish or shrimp tacos for lunch on the terrace overlooking the sea at http://www.georgesatthecove.com/oceanmenu.php?menu=6 Massages at: http://www.gaiadayspa.com/ Museum of Contemporary Art Sea kayaking There was also a place near the wine area near San Diego that was a day "spa" (not posh) with mud baths, steams, pools, etc. that was sort of cool - good value but showing age |

If you go to the beach, go early--parking can be very difficult. I've also been told that many people don't swim south of La Jolla because of Mexican sewage. |

Stay in Coronado. Everything is within walking distance. You can take the ferry into San Diego. |

I'm originally from San Diego and miss it soooo much. There is a lot to do in the downtown section. I've heard that they are renovating it so there are tons of cool restaurants and bars. Seaport Village is another nice stroll which isn't too far from the downtown area, but not within walking distance. |

Get kitsch and head for Tijuana...get some silver jewelery, your picture taken with a burron, get a taco, go for a bull fight and come back in time for leno. |

don't go to tijuana if you have limited time--it will take you at least a couple of hours to cross the border. |

My wife and I were out in San Diego back in June for a conference. We stayed at the Hilton Gaslamp, which was a comfortable hotel located right by the restaurants, and a few blocks from Padre stadium. My colleague had brought his entire family out, and they were staying at the Hotel Del Coronado, which is a beautiful resort. We had a nice meal at Cafe Sevilla, munching on a selection of Tapas, followed by a really filling paella (the order for two is really more than enough for three people!). The Sangria was good - and potent - as well!

Don't drive into Mexico. Park in a lot on the US side for a few bucks, walk across the border through the one-way turnstile (like they have in NYC subway!) and catch a crazy taxi to downtown. Walk around town a few hours. Get another crazy taxi to bring you back to the border and walk back across. If you have your passport, the pedestrian line is very quick. |
