Not a big meat eater but CRAVING a good steak. I know there is a Ruth's Chris in Morristown - any suggestions locally? Thanks! |

Ruth's Chris is at the Parsippany Hilton. It's their usual high end but very institutional product. The dining room of the Hilton at Short Hills does good steaks, but they're really not a feature of the menu. I'd get the best cut of meat I could find at Whole Foods or Kings' and slap it on the grill to the desired degree of (un)doneness. |

I agree with Innis. 1. Go to COSTCO and buy a big slab of MEAT. Any meat. They have lovely Australian lamb chops, by the way. 2. Bring it home. 3. Marinate it for a few hours in something simple, say, diced garlic and soy sauce with some fresh ground pepper. No salt. Use low-sodium soy if you have it. 4. Toss that sucker on a very hot grill and, as the man above said, grill to the desired degree of (un)doneness. A tip or two: turn the steak only once. Do not flip it over and over and over. Best way to tell if it's done? Use an instant-read meat thermometer. Medium rare? About 150 degrees. Take it off a few minutes BEFORE it hits 150 and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before you cut it. Let us know how it is. |

Cloverleaf Tavern on Bloomfield Ave. in Caldwell. 24-oz. New York strip steak, with salad and sides for @ #1295. The rest of the menu is also good. |

High end is The Strip House in Livingston--excellent. Pal's Cabin in West Orange has great steaks. Arthur's Tavern in Morris Plains is always good. |

I now work at Roots Steak House in Summit. It is excellent. Mid Western Corn fed beef. Fantastic swordfish, specials, etc. I've been in the restaurant business for over twenty years and this is some of the best food I've tasted. Bruce Johnson is the executive chef ( four star chef ) from Manhattan. Prices are on par with Ruth's Steak House but there is nothing institutional about it. If you ever have less than a great experience at Root's please speak with Scott or Chuck, the managers. I work the service bar. If you ever visit the restaurant please stop by and introduce yourself. My name is John. |

John, how is Roots in terms of child friendliness? I'm talking toddlers here. Is it at the old Roots site? |

Wendyn, Unfortunately it is not geared toward young children. There are no high-chairs because there is just no room to store them. I would suggest an early reservation if possible early in the week. There are booths if your children are old enough to sit safely in them. I do know I've made lots of Shirley Temples! Also, there is no child's menu. But we do serve a shrimp tempura appetizer which the children might be happy with. Also we serve a 24 oz prime rib that would last me for two or three meals so you might share that and still have enough to take home. Yes, it is at the old Roots site. Would love for you to visit us.

There is Michael's in Cranford that is pretty good. I believe it is on South Ave. You may try Rod's Steak & Seafood Grill in Morristown. I have not been there but have heard that is is good. Both of these places are pretty expensive. (maybe $30 - $35 steaks) There is also a Ruth Chris in Weehawken. |

Oh, and while I haven't been to the Strip House, I have heard that is it very good as well. BTW: I have 3 ny strips that marinated for a day in the fridge before I moved them to the freezer about a 2 weeks ago. Whenever I take those bad boys out they are going to be great. |

These are all good suggestions. However, I wouldn't want to order anything more meaty than a hamburger at Pal's Cabin, with all due respect to The Sopranos. Pal's is definitely "later at night and I want a good burger," or "I'm 77 years old and I want a watery whiskey sour and food." IMHO. |

I understand that the restaurant in the Westminster Hotel on Rt 10 West has wonderful steak. Haven't been there yet, too pricey. I usually throw steak on my grill. My husband and his buddies still go to Peter Lugars or the River Palm for their guys night out beef, spinach and tomatoes. |

I always enjoy the steaks at Steve's Sizzlin Steaks on Route 17 (is it Lyndhurst??) Old time steak place with only 4-5 steaks on the menu and the trimmings. |

Innisowen- FWIW- There was a discussion on this board last Fall about the good meat that is served at Pal's cabin. Have you tried their prime ribs recently? I had reason to dine there with clients for convenience sake and the food was excellent. By the way, we found the drinks to be very good too. Their martini's made the old fashioned way...with real liquor and not alot of sweet additives...(of course you could get an appletini if you wanted to. If you have not been there in the last year or so, I would not be so fast to knock this place...Good food, good drink and a real history about the place...

BGS: We can agree to disagree slightly. I believe that Pal's is great because it is such a part of local culture and activity. And the diversity of people who dine there is amazing. I have recently been there and tried their steaks and prime ribs. They're filling, yes. That's true. I still prefer not to eat much more than chicken or a burger there. "Everybody to his own likes and dislikes," as my grandmother said when she kissed the cow. |

I haven't been there in years, but I second Sammy's. A word of caution, you have to know where you are going. Sammy's didn't used to have a sign out front---does it now? Calli |

still no sign. (a once speakeasy) it's about a mile past the Black Horse Tavern on the right. No sign, cars parked all over the place, a line of 20 outside the door. Stand in line, give your name and your order, head to to the basement for drinks and arcade games until they call your name, back upstairs for dinner. You may have to look beyond the madras if that bothers you cause the food is worth it. loyal patron since 82. with younger family members at the helm, the wine list has increased 10 fold and you can google them for a web site. |

I also second Sammy's Grill. I forgot about it because we don't often go in that direction anymore. But it is a great place for great steaks and other fare as well. As the poster above said, make sure you know where it is. It's quite easy to drive past Sammy's and then you're off to hell and gone. |

BTW...the "NY Steak" at Fornos in Ironbound is superb and big enough to share. Aged well, cooked perfectly. Been going there when they were a hole in the wall...1981. Here's a great tip...did you know they offer the entire menu to go? (including sangria!) I often call an order in and pick it up on my way home from NYC. With the rice, potatoes, and sald all included...we feed all 5 of us, and have leftovers! shhh. |

Thanks! When someone said it was in Livingston, I was perplexed, because since moving here a year ago, I thought I had at least driven by every restaurant in town...but if it's in the Westminster, that explains it. I've never set foot in that place. But considering that Mr Zoesky1 is a steak maniac, I guess we'll be going there now! |
