I desire great peach ice cream. That has real pieces of peach in it, not dried candied peach. That tastes like peaches. That tastes like summer. That tastes like the peach ice cream they used to make at Grunnings. I thought I would find it down the shore, but no luck. Places that should and do carry it seem to be out of it and Im sorry, but I dont think Hershey's brand is going to cut it for me. Where can I get great quality peach ice cream besides trying to get an ice cream maker and making it myself? Please advise..thank you in advance. |

Can't advise but I have an ice-cream maker that has been used all of one time. I would be happy to regift it to you on the one condition that if you wind up making "great quality peach ice cream," you share a bit with my family. |

thank you for the generous offer, Wendy (Ive always wanted to make a honey lavender ice cream too and had a remarkable and intense basil ice cream at David Drake in Rahway)! but before I commit, I mean, accept, just how much is "a bit"? I was told that there are really good ice cream places in Morristown and Roselle I think, but do not know the names or the peach availability. |

Coco's, the new gelato place in Millburn on the corner of Millburn Ave and Main St has something with real chunks of peaches in it. I'm not sure if it will be what you are looking for. I checked them out on Saturday night and they did not (yet) have a very large selection of flavors.

If you have room for the gadget in your home Hank, TAKE IT, and thank Wendy profusely. Our sorbet/icecream maker is a crowd pleaser. We LOVE using it and now desire a bigger and better one. Unfortunately we don't use it as often as we would like, but it's a blast to use. Easy as pie (well ice cream really) to use. But our model does take up alot of room in our small kitchen. The base is pretty big and the frozen bowl is MUCH too big to leave in our freezer, so you have to plan a night ahead to use it. Regardless, take the gadget, if you got room. That was a very generous offer. |

Hank Did you try Applegates in Montclair and Summit -- and perhaps some other places too. Give them a call and ask -- they'll probably only make it in season. B |

In about three weeks, drive to the dairy at Penn State in State College, Pa. They have freezer bags and dry ice. Well worth the drive. They sell 5,000 gallons of ice cream each football weekend in the fall. |

Thanks for the kind words Alley. It's true the bowl takes up a lot of space (although I don't think I have that big a unit) but fortunately we have a deep freezer (my best garage sale find several years ago) in the basement where it has stayed ever since my son and I made our one and only ice-cream batch. It's just not our thing even though we like ice cream. I suppose I'm not as much of a gourmet as both you and Hank so it was never worth the effort. As far as you Hank, I can't believe you asked "but before I commit, I mean, accept, just how much is 'a bit'"? As Felix Unger has said: Oh Hank, Hank, Hank. Is there no trust? Is there no such thing as true giving? A bit means a bit means a bit. And only if you actually make the elusive peach ice cream. Then and only then, you can call me and I'll come over with one (not even two) small plastic teaspoon and be on my way. That of course will be enough to share with my family. Feel more at ease now?

Wendy, I hope I havent given anyone the impression that I thought your offer was most generous. And, being the giver that I am, you'd get way more than a bit (and more than a teaspoon), depending on how the ice cream turns out, of course. I am no gourmet, but I am confident that based on the feedback my friend Sbenois has given me, I should easily surpass Matzoh Charlotte quality levels previously discussed on this very message board. I still want to explore the commercially produced peach ice cream route first. Barbara, Thanks for reminding me of Applegate...its been a long while since Ive been there (in Montclair). |

There is an Applegates Farm just off Route 10 in East Hanover as well. The peach ice-cream does have chunks of peaches in it, but not all AGF's carry peach ice-cream. The Summit location has it. I called and asked.http://www.applegatefarm.com/history.htm |

Dear Hank, Try this place:Holsten's Brookdale Confectionary 1063 Broad Street Bloomfield, NJ 07003 (973) 338-7091 I just called and yes, they have their yummy fresh peach ice cream. This place is at the intersection of Watchung Ave. and Broad St. - GSP Exit 148. OMG, they make the BEST ice cream and chocolates! The mint ch. chip ice cream was my #1 crave with Baby #2. I very often take visiting friends and family there. Then head south on Broad to Gencarelli's Bakery for bread and pasteries. http://www.gencarellisbakery.com |

Homemade peach ice cream. I can't imagine it could get better than that. Have you tried the Haagen Dazs Peaches & Cream ice cream? "Juicy, sun-ripened peaches and a ribbon of peach puree swirl playfully through fresh sweet cream. All-natural and pure, it's an American classic." Seems like it would be easier than going to Bloomfield or Denville, and i can't imagine it could be anything short of pretty-good. |

I wouldn't call myself gourmet either. Although I do like good quality tasty food. We bought our sorbet machine when a friend made sorbet when we were over. We were blown away by how easy it was. Puree up some fruit and add a little sugar, turn on machine. EASY BREEZY. |

Try Maggie Moo's in East Hanover. They do make peach ice cream however it does not have chunks of peaches. They may have fresh peaches that you can add in. My favorite is the peach ice cream with cherries and blackberries mixed in |

Hank, I think you should buy the scrummy peach ice cream that people have mentioned on this thread, and I think you should take Wendy up on her kind offer of the machine and make some yourself, and THEN, you should hold a taste test contest with everyone who has posted on this thread as the judges (big portions of each for each judge) Oh, wow, I posted on this thread..... I can taste it now - yum.. Judge SOP |

My husband and I had great peach ice cream, and black cherry as well, at the Sussex County Fair (now the New Jersey State Fair.) This weekend should not be too witheringly hot. I would recommend the home made ice cream there, although the fair is crowded. You have to get there early. (It's in Augusta.) You could take I-80 to north on 23 to Newton, then go north on 206 in Newton to the fair, a mile or so outside of Newton.

I think yesterday was Jersey Fresh Ice Cream at the State Fair. Its a great fair, but I wont ever go on the weekend...I might take the kids up tomorrow but then again, I might save the gas for a trip to the Land of Make Believe next week...my son wants his Hot Dog Johnny's fix. Thank you all for the ice cream locale info!...I need to plot a course and try to hit up some of these places while it is still summertime. JTA and Newsteadmom, thanks for going the extra step and making calls. papayagirl...Ive had the Haagen Daz peach and it is good, but that peach swirl thing was like a peach jam. Ciao Bella might make a decent peach ice cream and maybe some of the other boutique ice cream producers. msg...was the place on Springfield Ave. on a corner? Zito's or Zita's? SOParents...I appreciate your suggestion. Of course an MOL function with only ice cream just wont cut it, so peach flavored sparkling wine and a peach sangria would have to be served as well (although I did brew a peach green tea yesterday for iced tea). I may take Wendy up on her generous offer although hanging out in S's kitchen making ice cream would be fun because we would be talking about all of you. In any event, I need to get hopping on getting some peach ice cream from some of these various suggestion sources since my wife is fixin' to make one of her great cardomom-spiced peach pies soon. |

Warning: thead drift Thank you, Hank,I am now nostalgic for Gruening's! The same vintage as Gruening's was an authentic old fashioned ice cream parlor and homemade chocolate shop, Schuttz' in Elizabeth. My father and his brothers went there with their parents in the '30s. Marble counters, gleaming stainless steel and the BEST fresh peach ice cream ever--only available from the end of July through the beginning of September. I remember watching Mr. Schuttz peel enormous white peaches. My dad asked him where the peaches were from. That weekend, we piled into the Oldsmobile and traveled to "The Wagon Wheel Farm" somewhere on Rt. 35 (it is probably condos now) There is, somewhere, a picture of me,around age 5, sitting in the crotch of a gnarled old tree, surrounded by peaches as big as my face. I love evrything peach--the most delectable, sensuous fruit. I think it was not an apple, but a peach in the Garden. I'd sin for the right, ripe peach. Calli as a footnote, Mr. Schuttz just closed up the shop one day and disappeared---ála Judge Crater |

OK...first up was the Creamery in Morristown. Very good place...they had "peaches and cream" ice cream. Not peach ice cream, but I would say the peach version of cherry vanilla. It had a lot of peaches in it, but it wasnt peach ice cream. I may be going to Clifton/Paterson/Little Falls tomorrow so I may have to swing into Bloomfield and try Holsten's as recommended. |

Holsten's rocks! It's real peach ice cream, not peaches in "cream". No peach chunks, but it tastes like peaches, which doesnt necessarily mean it tastes sweet. I guess that's the problem I have with peach type ice creams with candied peach or some peach swirl stuff. Plus, I tasted the chocolate chocolate chip and it had a sharp full chocolate taste. The place is a real throwback sort of parlor. There are booths and a long counter with stools. I even grabbed a quart of peach to go. Now if it had peach chunks in it, it would totally rule, but Id be surprised to find a better peach being commercially produced, but I will keep looking for a little while longer. Thanks Newsteadmom. |

I only scanned the listings, and didn't see a mention, but we had some yummy peach-blueberry ice cream at alstede's farm in chester. Peaches and blueberries are grown on their farm. They were unfortunately out of the peach-raspberry ice cream the day we visited, though we did have a chance to pick our own raspberries, peaches and blackberries. They also have animals to feed and a hay stack to climb on if you have little ones that like this kind of thing. |

ok...tried Uncle Mike's in Kenilworth on Boulevard (yes, that's it, just Boulevard, the main drag, not The Boulevard, not Kenilworth Boulevard, but just Boulvard). Uncle Mike's website claims to be the best ice cream in Union County and it says he studied ice cream making at Penn State (sounds kind of funny but I know John Caffrey earlier in this thread mentioned Penn State Dairy's great ice cream). Anyhow, one of my initial complaints about peach ice cream is that even places that make it dont always have it. Case in point..Uncle Mike's. He already has pumpkin ice cream though, so I guess there is some strange micro-climate thing going on in Kenilworth since he said he likes to turn the ice cream over quickly and with this weather he didnt think he could, so no more peach. OK, so I tried banana and coconut, and I will admit, it was the freshest tasting and creamiest hard ice cream Ive had, and tasted real, but it wasnt bursting with flavor...so I will assume that that would carry over for the peach. I think getting fruit flavor to be distinct and strong is tougher than other flavorings..just a theory. The only other bad thing about going to Uncle Mike's was that I decided to swing by the Greek Store on Boulevard (think Greek version of DiPietro's with a liquor license), and they were closed for the entire month for vacation. Oh well. |

Reporting back from Holsten's field research: The place is fabulous! A real, old-fashioned ice cream parlor, complete with counter and those round twirly stools at the counter. They make their own ice cream, there's a candy counter where I believe at least some of the candy is made by them, and there's a sit-down area (behind the freezer where they also sell their ice cream by the quart) and it looks like they have burgers and sandwiches, too. It is totally retro and totally charming - at least, to me, since it's strongly reminiscent of the ice cream parlor that I remember from my 1950's childhood. I got the peach ice cream - yummy! Next time, though, I'm getting vanilla, which is the true test of quality. Thanks for cluing me in to the existence of this place, MOL! I had no idea. |

jem and hank zona, Aren't you glad you made it to Hosten's? In 1976, I first came to NJ to do an internship in Montclair and my supervisor suggested the spot. Have gone there MANY times since. I love walking in and seeing the long dark wood cases of their fresh homemade chocolates. The chocolate "perfume" is intoxicating. When my kids were younger, I'd grab the softball gear, roller blades, frisbees etc. and have fun in the huge Brookdale Park which is 2 blocks away. Then to Holsten's for lunch sometimes, but always for ice cream. Their Black and White milkshakes are dreamy and creamy too! They also make a nice selection of molded chocolates for the holidays, esp. during Easter and Valentine's Day. I'd like to suggest a MOL F2F there. What do you think? They welcome big and little people there. |

what impressed me about Holstens (besides the ice cream) was watching them make a BLT...they put the white bread in a traditional pop-up toaster, and then ripped the iceberg lettuce from the head for the sandwich. It was so...basic. I bet they make a good club sandwich. The nonpareils I brought home were really good, too. |
