Where are the best places around here to get farmstand-fresh corn on the cob (on days when the Farmers Market is not open)?

Around there I don't know, but I have spent the better part of forty summers studying and immersing myself in NJ corn. My secret is Alpha, NJ. There is a corn stand here with corn that is absolutely the best I ever had, and as I am from Ohio originally, I am an expert on corn. Now, next in line for corn excellence is Wightman's on 202 just south or Morristown. After that, or maybe somewhat before that, you should try Melicks, in Oldwick, just off of 78 west.

But Alpha's best. Also, Alpha has recently been identified as having one of the best hot dogs in NJ, at Charlie's Pool House. We tried it. The sauce is absolutely delicious, as Charlie's Mom was from Hungary (Alpha is home to many Eastern European-Americans) and developed a secret recipe while men came to play pool in her husband's pool hall.

To get to Alpha, you take 78 west to the end of 78 in NJ, turn into P'burg, turn off at the first ramp and into Hawk Rd., south on 519. To find Charlie's Pool Hall, turn right off of 519 at the Baglesmith (on your right) and left just past the railroad tracks. You'll find his residence on the left, past the Alpha Town Hall.

The corn stand is right on 519, just past the railroad overpass and Vulcanite Ave,

Good luck finding all this.

Yours truly,

T.

OMG, my aunt lives in Washington, NJ, and we actually get our corn from Alpha as a coincidence. We love the corn so much we get it every time we visit my aunt. Who'da thunk it was the best??? I feel so cool, by chance.

Hey, Alleygater, you're kidding!!! The farm stand on 519? I don't know what makes it so good, but it's the sweetest, juiciest corn I have ever tasted.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the same place. Is it a little farm right off the road with a cow or two penned in. They sell plants and other fruits and vegetables. Pies too.

This is the best part of going to visit my (Ohio) parents in July/August - coming home with sacks of corn.

There's a guy down the street from my mom who picks a bunch in his fields every morning and sells it next to the road. Because of the weird weather this summer, they're gonna get 2 or 3 crops out. But the 1st was early and he was out when we were there 3 weeks ago.

But, that doesn't help us here, does it?

Last week, I went into the Bridgewater Wegman's to get milk or some such boring thing. They actually carry locally grown seasonal produce. I picked up some butter & sugar corn for .20 an ear, supplied by a farm in Hackettstown. It was delish - rivaled OH corn.

I'm going to OH this weekend. I wonder if I'll be able to bring a few ears back or if it will be declared "bomb material" and I'll have to throw it out....

A local farmers' market can usually be found each day of the week:
Monday-Maplewood
Tuesday-Millburn
Wednesday-South Orange
Thursday-Madison
Friday-West Orange (I think)
Saturday-Montclair
Sunday-Summit
