My husband and I are thinking of taking a short vacation at the end of Sept., without our toddler. I'm expecting #2 in early Feb so this may be our last 'alone' vacation for a while. Unfortunately, we are limited to the number of days we can be away - it will most likely be Weds through Sun/Mon. Any suggestions of a nice getaway spot? The Carribean would be great due to short flight time but it's hurricane season! Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Madhu |

Your talkin' to a born and raised Floridian, here. DO NOT go to the Caribbean at the height of the hurricane season. August through October are the worst for storms. If you want close beach, you could try Hilton Head. It'll be hot as all hell, but beautiful. http://www.hiltonheadisland.org/visitorinformation/all_visitor_info.html Their are beautiful coastal islands in Georgia, too. I like Jekyll Island. http://www.coastalgeorgiaexperience.com/site/502999/page/445361 You could also go north to Block Island in Rhode Island. I LOVE the Mohonk Mountain House - and you could drive. What you save on airfare you will need to pay for the room! Its pricey, but nice. http://www.mohonk.com/ Have a wonderful trip! GOod luck with the babe!

Posted here in the past...www.Copperhood.com We went for our tenth anniversary. Ahhhhhh...There were only 5 of us there, my husband and I and a group of 3 women, one of whom was pregnant. We did a lot of hiking (even the pregnant woman, on her 4th!), yoga, etc. Food was fabulous, great service, so private and personalized. 2 hours away or so, near Woodstock. |

how about NYC? stay in a hotel and just do all the things you did pre-kid, or just always wanted to do. easy, close, though not terribly cheap. |

If one is worried about hurricanes, wouldn't Georgia and Hilton Head also be off the list? |

When I was pregnant with #2, my husband and I went out to Amagansett, on the NOrth Fork of Long Island. It was November, so no tourists, no traffic, lots of vacancies, etc. The beach was wonderful for walking and picnics,we climbed the lighthouse at Montauk, and had a great tour at Duck Walk Vineyard (even if you can only have a sip, it's fun to try a couple of new wines! Duck Walk is also much less snooty than other vineyards out there), and the B&B was wonderfully relaxing, with a big tub and a working fireplace. There are lots of other places to visit and stuff to do, too. There was even a very post-modern "burlesque" show at a local club (too bizarre for words). It was a bit of a schlep from here, but the off-season prices were good and we had a fantastic time. I'd think that going end of September you could get good rates. Enjoy your vacation! |

Well it ain't the Carribean, but I can highly recommend Cape May, NJ. September is probably one of the absolute BEST times to be there. The weather is still beautiful and all the crazy summer crowds have gone home so the kiddies can go back to school (me included ). During "off season" it shouldn't be more than a two hour drive, straight down the parkway! Hubby and I went there during February break (when the kiddies were visiting mom and dad) and had a wonderful time. We stayed here: http://www.congresshall.com/ It's a really great, recently renovated hotel overlooking the ocean, in the heart of the historic district, within walking distance to EVERYTHING! Before kids, our absolute favorite was here: http://www.mainstayinn.com/ An utterly spectacular Victorian B&B (one of the first in Cape May), also in the heart of the historic district. If neither of those places are of interest, there are dozens of other options. Feel free to P/L me with any questions. Just so you know, Cape May is probably one of my most favorite places on earth, so I could be a bit biased (just got back from a week there, and can't wait to go back next summer)! |

Go to the part of the caribbean outside the hurricane belt if you are set on the caribbean. St Lucia and Antigua are beautiful and are rarely affected by hurricanes because of their location. Great sales to both right now. We are partial to the Sandals chain for a carefree vacation. The regency is St Lucia has excellent sales right now. |

Seems now flying is even more of a gigantic pain with all these new restrictions. I wonder if I'd even bother. |

The only real change in US travel is not being able to bring liquids/gels/creams on the plane. So, pack them in your checked luggage and pack more clothes or shows in your carry-on. Problem solved. I don't see thei as some great inconvenience other than you'll have dry hands and less than fresh breath when you arrive . I doubt it will take too much longer to get through security now that they have the details laid out and people are getting familar with the policy. A report in the paper over the weekend said all was smooth from NY airports unless you were going to London. Although I love Puerto Rico, I would worry about it being inside of the hurricane belt at the end of Sept- not for safety reasons but strictly because I would want great weather! Even it there are just trop storms and they are even near PR, you'll wind up sitting in rain and wind for 4 out of 5 days! |

How do you travel without liquids if you have a baby? Non-nursing babies need formala, and they all need wipes, creams, etc. Not to mention all of the liquids, gels and creams they create all on their own. |

The no liquids rule doesn't apply to baby formula. A wipe is not a liquid or gel or cream and my guess is that can probably wait on diaper cream for a few hours. |

Newport, RI is a wonderful place to go for a short vacation. The weather will still be wonderful in Sept - and there is so much to do besides the beach: cliff walk, shops, take the ferry and visit Block Island, mansion tours. There are so many wonderful restaurants as well. Its about a 4 hour drive.. give or take.. or you could always fly to Providence.. stay at The Black Duck Inn... so cute... blackduckinn.com |
